Tracks,,Dog or Coyote???

The past week has a great time to be in the woods, with the snow. Have not killed anything but have a real chance to scout. I understand that coyote tracks are usually more egg shaped rather that round. But what about the gait. Do they put their feet down in a straight line? Or are they staggered? What sets a coyote track apart from a dog?
 
Coyote tracks are a little offset, not in the straight line you're used to seeing with fox. With fox, you'll see hind print on top of fore print, and that's usually not the case with coyote - they'll be off center just a bit, although much more in a straight line than dogs. In terms of dogs, they're just all over the place.

Coyote's also place the hind foot in the track of the front foot just slightly offset.If you look closely you can tell the two feet apart.The toes of the front foot show just ahead and slightly to the side fo the toes you see in the track.When they are walking or just standing the back foot will show to be more egg shaped or oval in shape than the front foot.And unlike the dog the front foot is larger than the hind .Jimmie

The eastern coyotes trotting gait is almost the same as a red fox. They are both direct registering animals(one print on top of the other). Obviously the strides will be different.
Average stride for coyote is 19" to 21", Red fox is 13" to 18-1/2"
Domestic dog stats will vary depending on the breed. However domestic dogs are double registering animals. They leave a very sloppy trail.

Eastern coyote tracks are oval. The front nails are close together and slant toward each other(usually). Their side nails usually do not register.
Domestic dog tracks are round. The front nails are more spread out and slant away from each other(usually). The side nails usually do register.
There is a little more to it, but that should help you out.
 
If this pic works it shows the difference between coyote and dog tracks. The coyote tracks are longer and more elondated (pair on left), than the domestic dogs (right). Usually the only the front two toes will print claws, but in mud or if the coyote is running all claws may be seen. Hope this helps a little.
