trail cameras

I am wondering if anybody has experience with trail/scouting cameras? I am looking for a digital that doesn't cost too much. I have a cheap film trail camera that does OK but I get a lot of blank pictures at night. I set it up over bait and the bait is gone but many times there is nothing in the picture. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Basil

I have a cheap digital and it works ok for the $40.00 i spent on it but I would really like a better one. Mine seems to have a delay on it too.

I love the Moultrie gamespy 200 3.0 mp

Date not set on fox pic, it was taken this summer

I like my moultree 3mp pretty good, but it does require bait in front of the camera due to delay time. I think the insant pic cameras are pretty exp, but im not too sure? Ive got a few deer, dog, red and grey fox on mine using bait.

The lower end digitals have slow triggerspeed. You can get a fast trigger speed with a film camera at lower cost but then you have to pay to develop the pics. I guess you just can't be cheap like me and have the best of both worlds. I have one built from the fieldpix kit, it's 35mm but has a fast triggerspeed. I've even captured bucks chasing does with it. It works great but I hate the developing.

I purchased a Moultie I40, infrared 4.0 megapixel last month, 179.99 from Natchez. I have two others a stealthcam film and Moultrie digital flash.

The new cam has great trigger time, less than a second. I like its performance so much, I ordered another one last friday.

Hi wvmickey,
How do you like the pictures with the infrared flash? They seem to me to be black & white at night. Though I guess that the infrared won't scare the critters away as my flash does.

wvmickey-Wallace? Wow, I've stomped alot of woods in that area. I've hunted with Swigers, Jones, and Claypools all over that country. Mainly the 10-mile area. Some real good hunting around those parts.

I have had good success getting shots with the several homebrew cameras I have made using Sony digital cameras. I personally did not have much luck with the commercial models I bought for around $150.

I always found that baiting was absolutely necessary for consistent results. I used the technique in below freezing weather of freezing meat scraps and bones in a pail of water then freezing it and wiring it to a small tree or a stake. In warm weather like now, I encase it in chicken wire so the meat is bulging out. It keeps them coming night after night.

I have found coyote are much more flash shy than deer in general. The no flash IR models are perfect but they are also more coin. If you use a Flash model, set it for shot intervals like 15 or 30 minutes so as not to drive them away. They will get used to it if it's less often.

Hope this helps!

i keep low res on all my cameras. the night pictures are
black and white. i found most deer are spooked by the flash.
although not all of them are. During january of 2004, i watched eight of them for 45 minutes from the shed at night. they were feeding on corn i put out. they would feed toward the camera and when it flashed, run 100 yards to the stream and woods. they would wait 3 to 4 minutes then come back to the corn. it would flash and back to the stream they would go. this happened many times during the 45 minutes.

i know the jones's and met claypool over on ten mile. there is plenty of game around the area. my neighbor up the hollow a half mile has had calves killed this year and last year. i hear them now and then, but haven't had any success enticing them in. i had one trail cam out 2003 to 2005, got my second in 06 and no coyote pics yet. i now have 4 of them working. i am waiting for the surveyors to finish on my property and start moving them around the place.

Thanks for the information, wvmickey. I went digital with the Moultrie Gamespy 4.0 with a flash. Though it scares away game I get a color picture at night. Most of my shots have been at night and all were over bait. I am waiting for the camera to come in as I only bought it Saturday.

I use a bushnell and moultrie cams.
I got my first pictures or yotes and a fishercat with the bushnell.
These cams are alot of fun!
