Training a dog to hunt yotes

I cant seem to find any info on this topic I got the dog and the time just cant seem to find the right steps to to take to get it going . If anyone knows where I can find som info in this please PM me thanks Boz
 
There is an article in the latest issue of Predator Xtreme about training coyote decoy dogs you might find interesting.
 
Take your dog out hunting and calling with you , Keep it on a training tether ( long) leash, but keep him close to you . call in a few coyotes but dont shoot them ,( you can only hope the dog sees what is going on) let the dog figure out what this game is all about . Do not let the dog go out to the coyotes and do not shoot close to the dog ( gun shy is hard to fix if not impossible) . After a few outings your dog should figure out what it is all about . Training a decoy dog is quite easy , training a toaling(SP) dog takes alot more time, and is best done with a seasoned dog along with you . Most dogs will figure out the game within a few outings . If you can wound or trap a coyote and let your dog work it its a great learning tool .Another important thing for your dog to learn is tracking a wounded coyote . kill a coyote, and let your dog get used to them teach him to find this dead coyote by draging thru the brush and letting him find it no matter how long it takes , dont lead the dog to it but if the dog is having trouble you can help him a little . REWARD the dog for his efforts . do this over and over again farther and farther away from you until he gets the idea. make it a fun game for your dog. dont yell at him and above all be patient . Be extra carefull not to get your dog in trouble with a pair or a big male , a big male coyote can make a mess of a dog in short order , and if they are tangled up its very easy to shoot your dog trying to save his butt. Oh yeah almost forgot , all of this is best done with just you and your dog until he learns the ropes . another hunter is just another distraction and no matter who it is just another way to screw things up . This is a class room and one on one is the best medicine . good luck , jerry .
 
O'Gorman from MT has several good denning tapes with the late Vern Dorn using his dogs to kill coyotes. They "play tag with the coyote" until they are in range or whatever. There is some good info on the tapes. Vern's dog line is now sold by O'Gorman.T.20
