Transporting firearms through Canada

May be moving to Alaska . How do I get across Canada with long guns (several are AR-15's ? And is there any way to get hand guns through even if they are locked up ?
Pretty sure I know the answer to the last .But doesn't hurt to ask .

If it were me, I'd call the nearest police department chief in Alaska (Anchorage or Fairbanks) and ask if they would be willing to accept a shipment and hold them for your arrival. Or ship them to a dead drop address for pickup.

Of course, being a retired officer, I think that way...

Canada used to be tight on all handguns, even active duty officers from the states, and they've since tightened the regs on long guns, requiring an advanced permit, inspection, etc. and I understand they do not like ARs..

Have someone with an FFL ship your guns to another FFL holder in Alaska. It's just that simple. Oh and forget about trying to transport handguns thru Canada, it's just not possible anymore.

deathdealer2, this might help (from the Canada Firearms Centre):

"Q. Can a non-resident bring firearms into Canada?

The Canada Border Services Agency is responsible for deciding whether to let a non-resident bring a firearm into Canada. As a general rule, non-residents may bring a non-restricted rifle or shotgun into Canada for approved purposes such as hunting, target shooting, wilderness protection or in-transit movement by a reasonably direct route to another point outside Canada.

Restricted firearms (mainly handguns and some semi-automatic long guns) can generally only be imported if the person can demonstrate a need for having the firearms in Canada – for example to take part in an organized target-shooting event.

For more information on the documents you will need to import a firearm, please refer to the fact sheet for firearm owners visiting Canada."

The fact sheet is found here:

When travelling at night the gun has to be locked and cased. OPP in Ontario did a stop in the area I hunted and caught quite a few who didn't know about the trigger lock law at night. Ship via FFL and rest easy.

I think I have been doing it legally, but some maybe not. I go into Canada from Michigan a couple of time a year to fish. I hold no grudge agains black Bears, but I don't want one to feed one, so I carry a Rem 870 along. I stopped at US Customs leaving the country and they filled out a form that basically said that the gun originated in the US and could therefore come back into the US. Then, on the Canadian side I stopped at their customs office and got a form from them allowing me to have the gun in their country. That for is reusable and costs $25 each time I go. Nobody said anything about gun locks but I keep the gun in the case in the tent at night and locked in the truck while fishing. The first time they came out and looked at the gun, after that I gust take the form in and pay the man. Driving to Alaska, I would ship most and take one for security at night. $25 per gun would pay a lot of shipping.
