Trap mod questions - welder

I am new to trapping and was thinking about trying to make some modifications to my traps. I was thinking about laminating and adding base plates. I have seen some ideas that I want to try but I was wondering how big a welder I would need. I was looking at getting a 100amp stick welder for this and other little things around the house. Its working range is 30-80amps with peak of 100. It is on sale for 100 bucks and I think it might work. Is this going to be hot enough or to hot for trapping equipment? Also do you think this would work to make rebar stakes??
Thanks for the help
Mark

i run a mig too, a stick takes to much time when trying to build them for money, im guessing your going to be makeing them simular to the ones you can buy. if so then 100 amps is defonatly anouph. you can make one of them big hog traps with a 100 amp welder.
good luck

Thanks for the replies. I would like to get the mig type but they cost about $330 and to start with I can get the arc welder for $99. Money is a bit tight now so if this will work for a couple years I figure I can always upgrade.
Thanks again,
Mark

Tactical .20,
I paid 99.00 for my Lincoln buzz box, but that was back in the 1960,s. I wouldn't recommend a wire feed welder for welding on traps. They work nice if you clean the rust off first though.

if you get a stick welder be sure you get one that can weld DC, dont get it if it only welds AC, DC rods are a little cheaper and more plentifull. when i use a stick welder i will use mostly 1/8th 7018 rods, sometimes 3/32 rods. depends on how thick your metal is. i mostly use 1/4'' cold roll for my traps. if your metal is rusty though, then you well need some 6011 welding rods. they weld rusty metal good. i am currently going to college for welding so i will help the best i can. dont hesitat to ask questions if i dont know the answer i will ask my welding instructer. pm me if you have any questions. good luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

One place I worked for had the ground and the hot leads changed around, he said it would weld heavier loads or more like a dc? I didn't understand what the advantage was. We made and hard surfaced a lot of large farm equipment with this cheap little Miller. I learned how to weld cast iron on this welder and vertical welds with 7014 on it.T.20

im not for sure but i think that you swap the leads so that you can tig with the ac. but i dont know about swaping them and still welding with a stick. i will talk to my teacher about it tomarow
