Tree climbing coyotes?

ArizonaArcher, several years ago I called a coyote in that climbed 10-12 feet up into a dead palo verde. A fire had left a number of skeletons standing and the coyote went up for an elevated view. It jumped from fork to fork rather than gripping the trunk as a fox or cat does. Still pretty cool to see the little guy way up there before my hunter shot it out of the tree.

I personally haven't seen any coyotes climb trees, but I know of one incident where it did happen. Vargy (on the houndsman forum mostly) has a couple pictures of a coyote that climbed a tree in a pen, i guess to get away from the hounds. He posted the pics on the houndsman forum a year ago, I went back and found them, but all thats there is the dreded red X. I won't say that it can't happen because I'm sure it can. But it would be rare. And com'on surely if we've all been hunting for several years, HOPEFULLY we'd know the difference between a gray fox and a coyote pup??? See ya, MOyotehunter

I had a wolf/akida hybred that could climb - he could get 10 feet straight up before he would have to start looking for branches to "aid " his assent. Found this out quite by accident, he HATED cats and had a bad (depending on who you ask) habit of catching , killing and eating any cat he saw.
I watched him run up a good 10 feet of tree and snatch 'ol foo foo kitty right off the bark.
Later we would find him chasing them through the branches .
Needless to say , all the stupid cats around the place died pretty quickly - well the stupid ones and the slow ones.
Oh and these were cottonwood trees BTW.

Sometimes it's kind of funny how these threads go in different directions. The wolf/akida thread reminded me of my black lab Sam. He hated cats and would kill them at any opportunity. One day I'm walking around the back of the house and it looks like he has a ball in his mouth. I walk over to see what it is and it's a cats head!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif I was so proud of him. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I have never seen a coyote climb a tree. But during archery during the early morning at day break i saw 3 red fox come out of a tree. I thought that was weird but i guess it wasn't. And they were pretty high up in that tree.

Ok, heres the answer, I asked my dog whats the deal about this tree climbing thing and he told me Its a secret ability that dog's dont want cats to know about /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I will believe the tree climbing coyote stories just as soon as I actually see it with my own eyes. Jumping up onto a low branch, or walking up a leaning tree is one thing. Climbing straight up? Nope, they don't have the proper claws to do that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Dave Letterman or Jay Leno had a guy on who had a bull dog that climbed right up a telephone pole, without pegs or steps. I have seen to many thing in nature that shocked me to rule out anything. Coyotes learn socialy and it is intirely possible for them to climb, all it would take is one or two doing it and teaching it to their offspring. AzArcher, you have seen a cool thing. We are all just a bit jealous. Don't take it personaly. These guy are really good dudes, I am sorry if you were affended.

I've seen a coyote run up an old water oak tree to get away from the 4 Walker Hounds that where right on his tail. The tree was very large and leaning over. The dogs followed him up for 5 feet or so and slid down. The coyote made it to the first fork of branches maybe 10 ft up and just clinged there. The branches being the diameter of a car tire. I'm not sure that was true climbing though.
