Trip to Bend Oregon Area ???s

I am planning on a trip, or two, to the Bend area this spring (I climb at Smith Rocks), and some shootin' would be cool too!

I have a few questions though.

Are there prairie dogs (sage rats, poppers... whatever ya wanna call'em) in the area? And would any of you guys in the neighborhood like to go along and/or show us around?
We are considering going to the "Crane Sagerat Hunt" the huntseek guys are havin'... and it's a long drive for a weekend... it'd be nice to round it out with some climbin' and shootin around Terrabonne... make a week of it.

Does anyone know of the land ajoining The Grasslands-Skull Hollow Campground (Terrabonne) are open for hunting coyotes year round? I know I've seen deer come out of there before.
*Note*... This would be an awesome place for an Oregon Rendezvous!

Who's in the neighborhood down there, REM 700 and a couple more of you? Too bad I don't know how to find Muss... I didn't know he was from down that way when I met him at the NW Rendezvous. I did a search for "Bend Oregon" and mostly saw a bunch of guys I didn't recognize...

Any advise on public lands down there for hunting would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

The reason we go to Crane is the shear volume of targets, the hunting on private lands in the area your talking about (my home turf btw), is kinda hit and miss do to the fact most people are now using poison pellets for the sage rats, and that the farms are getting chopped up pretty heavly and it's getting harder and harder to find good places to shoot. Look for places that look neglected and have lots of mounds. Your best bet might be lowerbridge area, but getting permission may be tough.

Of course public land outside the park is open year round. And the grasslands can be an interesting area to explore.

Thanks a lot Catskin! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So... like, it's your neck of the woods...
you must have someplace to shoot... (hint hint)

Yeah, the Grasslands is a pretty cool place, I hike there on the days my hands are too fried from the sharp volcanic rock in the Park. The place is full of critters of all kinds, and the view from the top is impressive. The main trails get a little bit of mountainbike and horse use but the off trail stuff is vast and well game trailed.

You should go huntin' with us out there (more hinting). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif If I'm gonna spend $58.50 on a non-resident license (fully reasonable) I'm gonna get my money's worth out of it!

Can you, or anyone else from your neighborhood, tell me how much longer of a drive it is from Bend to Crane?

Thanks again,

Jeff

Aaaaa haaaaa So you're the one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I have some friends that live in Princton and they tell me every year about the guys in Crane shooting rats with their pickup mounted stands and rows and rows of rifles. They're afraid to drive anywhere near you guys for fear of catching a stray.

When's the date? Can I join? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

QUOTE -> you must have someplace to shoot... (hint hint)

Yeah Crane /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It's about 2 to 3 hours drive.

All the info is posted on Huntseek, it's a pretty informal hunt.

Nope Johnny, thats not us but we do hunt there too.

No, I don't have anywhere to shoot.
I live in Western Washington and we don't have prairie dogs to shoot at... don't know if we have anything like that in Washington at all.

We have to limit our entertainment shooting to crows, starlings and clay pigeons, no small mammals to speak of. We have squirrels but mostly only in town, where we can't shoot at 'em.

Jeff here in Wa. there aren't any places to go shoot prairie dogs but you can find some Gray Diggers over around Yakima and Wenas areas. They don't sit out much in the open from what I have seen of them. You need to find water and brushy areas and you need to be concealed pretty good also. If they see ya they usually stay hunkered down. Most shots are quick as they tend to run across the dirt roads and get into the brush really fast.

Maybe someone else can give you more advice on where to go and how to setup for them.

Thanks FALFire,

Good, just one more excuse to go to Wenas.

Red's been wanting to get over there anyway.
