While at the SHOT show last January I became aware of a new scope that Nikon is coming out with. It is designed with the help of Gary Roberson. Knowing Gary and his experience as well as Nikon's reputation I had to give this scope a look. After talking with the guys from Nikon I agreed to give the new scope a true test. The purpose of this post is not to give a review of this product but to share this morning’s hunt. I will write up a full review of this new scope and post it in the proper forum when I get a little more time tomorrow. I will say this though….I believe I’m going to like it.
Sam and I had made plans to meet this morning, but the weather wasn’t the best. The temperatures were good and cold but the front that had pushed in the cooler weather had not quit pushing. The winds were howling. After three dry stands in more open country we decided to head for thicker cover. We felt that maybe the coyotes were hunkered down in the thick stuff to avoid the high winds.
We chose a thick pine thicket where we had called in a black coyote a few weeks back. If you saw that post you remember we didn’t get him.
We set up with the wind in our favor looking down an old logging road.
I started my Foxpro call out playing the grey squirrel in distress. At about 5 minutes into it I switched to the snow shoe hare sound. At about 6 minutes here comes our first customer.
She would come a bit, stop, come a bit, and then stop again. I decided when she got to about 125 yards I would try and take her. In this thick stuff, all she would have had to do was step off the road and she would be out of sight. When she stopped I settled the new circle reticle on her chest and let it fly.
The shot was good but she jumped and made it out of sight and into the thicket.
I swapped to the Ki-Yi sound on my call, played it for a few seconds and then back to the snowshoe. About two minutes later # 2 shows.
I quickly put him down, and kept calling.
Stand by.....more to come....
