Nice rack, Gary.
I hunt only private property and it is legal to shoot from a stationary vehicle in Texas as long as you are on private property, so I like to have my firearms handy in both the jeep and my club cab pickup. Each presents it's own problems.
The CJ is small and has very limited space for mounting rifle rack. Best fit I found was
this rack from Cabela's , but 4WD & parking brake levers prevented mounting as suggested in Cabela picture. Rifles (2) are carried in the rack and the "snake doctor" (20 ga NEF youth SG) rides in a saddle scabbard behind and over driver's left shoulder (red arrow).
I was unable to find anything that would mount in my full size club cab pickup due to console, so devised this home made custom built
rack. The front end rests on dash board and is held down to console by a bungee cord (visible right behind flashlight).
The rear end rests on the back of console and buts up against back seat to prevent slipping off the dash; it is also held in place by another bungee cord.
Looking forward from back seat:
It is a work in progress, having been altered a couple of times to conform to various different firearms. Currently holds a bolt gun on left and right side and an AR top center. Need to change the center rack to fit my M1 since I can no longer use an AR. All friction points between firearms and truck dash/seat are padded w/carpet and the two bungees are all that hold it in place so can be easily removed when the truck goes to town. It also carries flashlight, calls, earmuffs and phone charger.
Notches are deep enough that it is not necessary to strap the rifles down, even off road, making them readily accessible.
