True Grit:: Dust Bowl Survivors

My BIL and sister can confirm that recent years have produced less rain in their part of southeastern CO than even the dust bowl days. What was bad then is every bit as bad now.

The soil conservation methods are much different now than they were then, though. There may be dust storms - and I saw some of them myself when I was in that area a couple of years ago - but the damage to topsoils and crop lands over the long term will not be as severe there if they keep up modern farming methods.

Related to above they said this morning that a group of scientist independent of the UN found no evidence of climate change. Just historical weather patterns. It seems the UN has an agenda about everything. I know things are different than when farming as a young man but people don't live long enough to know much about long term weather. I think o will try to be a big deal in the un when he has to give up his big jets. To him, that is the King of the World position.

There is a real good show on the dust bowl years that comes on cable fairly often.
It's 2 hours long and well worth watching.

Both my parents were farm kids in southwest Nebraska during the dust bowl years.
So I've heard a lot about it and the conditions over the years.
Grandparents did anything and everything they could for work to support the family.
Grandmothers sewed clothes that were sold to the work crews in the work camps.
Grandfathers worked at the camps plus tried to farm.
My mother got dust pneumonia when she was around 4 or 5 years old. She was hospitalized
for over a year. During that time the doctors did some kind of weird operation where they
removed some back ribs and removed portions of her lungs. After she got out of the
hospital she lived with the doctors family for another year or so as they had electricity
and running water and could provide her with better care.
Whenever mom is in the hospital and the doctors see the surgical scars or lung xrays that
always comes up and discussed. The doctors are always intrigued and amazed.
Mom is probably 1 of the oldest survivors of dust pneumonia.
Not many survived it.
Sadly mom was diagnosed with lung cancer a few months ago.

I've posted a few photos from that time period here before and I have lots more but not
exactly sure where they are. I'm guessing in boxes at mom's house.
