True Grit

I can't wait, we're going to see it tomorrow!

i saw it friday and definitely give it a solid 4 out of 5 popcorn bags. the young female lead was outstanding and jeff bridges and matt damon did a great job as well. like others have said, it's a different animal than the original, but several good lines made the jump from the old to the new (fill your hands you son of a ...). i'm a big fan of anything the coen brothers do.

Saw it last night. While it was well done, in my opinion it fell well short of the original. Scenery was not up to par with the original, and while Bridges & Damon are great actors, neither one filled the shoes of Wayne or Campbell in this particular instance. I'd rate it a 8/10 ... unless you compare it to the original. If you make that comparison, it's a 6/10 in my book.

I mean .... HOW to do replace John Wayne?

I don't regret seeing it ... but I wasn't overly impressed.

I agree 100%

I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Although I'm a Jeff Bridges fan. I had a problem understanding some of his character's mumbling. The young girl who played "Mattie" did an outstanding job, playing her part.

No one will ever replace John Wayne, not even close.

+1 to Hidalgo. Saw it last night and it was good. As good as original? No way! No one can top the Duke. The girl was better than the original and that was bout it. Not spoiling it for the others. Tombstone has it beat IMHO.

Both of the "Wyatt Earp" movies were way better, IMO.

But what do I know ... the movies with the BAD reviews are usually the ones that I seem to like ....

Hard to beat those for sure.

I haven't see TG yet (I'll wait till it's out of theaters), but I've heard that whereas John Wayne played John Wayne to perfection, Bridges played Rooster Cogburn fairly well.

Leon, you are probably correct. It's unfair of me to compare Bridges to John Wayne. It's kinda like comparing Pierce Brosman to Sean Connery in the 007 movies.

Once an actor becomes an "Icon", it's simply a done deal.

I just hope they're smart enough to not try and re-do a Clint Eastwood classic .....

Maybe that "bridges" thing, but I can't think of another Eastwood movie that any other actor could improve on.

Are you and your son going to make it to the convention/hunt this year? You could use one of those Rugers to win a real rifle at the egg shoot.

My wife and I went to see it yesterday afternoon. Looking around before it started, we realized we were some of youngest in the theater. We are were showing our age I guess since most of them were gray hairs, and I'm getting pretty gray myself.

Anyway, I really liked it. It has been a long time since I've seen the original, but I thought Bridges gave an exception performance.

I was less impressed with Matt Damon, but thought the girl played the part very well too.

I did think they went a little bit overboard with the language. Not bad language, but how they talked. I find it hard to believe that people talked like that. The old guy wearing the bear head was the most exaggerated example of what I am talking about.

Good movie and I wish they would make more westerns. Maybe now that the baby boomers and busters are making up so much of the population, we will get a few more.

3:10 to Yuma was excellent I thought, as was Open Range.

Tombstone was much better than Wyatt Earp in my opinion. I didn't care for Kevin Costner as much as Kurt Russell, and Val Kilmer was definately a better Doc Holiday than Dennis Quaid.

I saw it a few days ago, and it's now one of my favorite movies. I thought Bridges was a great Rooster Cogburn, and Matt Damon and Hallie Steinfeld were excellent as La Boeuf and Mattie Ross. Barry Pepper pulled off Lucky Ned Pepper wonderfully, but his Remington 1875 stole the show.

I did like the gun selection in it alot, me and my brother are always splittin' hairs on the guns of westerns, saying "Ooops, he's using an '86 in 1878! For shame!"

We didn't see anything "period IN-correct" in this one!

I was very pleased with the movie.

Speaking of that, I was watching Unforgiven the other night. At the end after the shootout with Little Bill, Will Munny is reloading his rifle through the butt stock. Any idea what rifle that was?

Spencer rifle. Little Bill Daggett "I don't deserve this, to die like this." Will Munny as he aims the Spencer point blank at little Bill and cocks the hammer "Deserve got nothing to do with it." Unforgiven is one of my all time favorite westerns. So many good lines. Grizz

Unforgiven is a "classic". One of the best westerns ever in my book. No fluff, no hype, just honest, though I am no expert on 1870's to 1880's time frame

Wife and I saw True Grit last evening. The little girl was sensational. I thought that Jeff Bridges brought a little "reality" to this western, but I will always love JW. I thought that the acting was great overall, but Matt Damon's character was not quite real to me. A bit forced and unnatural, but not terrible, just that the other two parts were so well played.
Overall I felt that it was a great western and wish that people would do more of this quality. It is a shame that somewhere along the way this time period has been forgotten by today's Hollywood.

Jeff Bridges, played Bill Hickock. In the movie "Wild Bill". I thought his acting was excellent & he played his part well. He even strongly resembled Bill Hickock. Overall, I'd give that movie a 10.
