Try the Verminator! (pic)

Hi Gang. Saturday was a real high wind day on the east coast, but its the last chance I'd have to Coyote hunt until our shotgun season ends in 2 weeks, so I said what the hell.

The Verminator "thumper" is new to me, but I've already had good results. Its a little louder than my Primos Regulator 10. That Regulator is a DEADLY call also. You can make a raspy Jack to a Cottontail on the Verminator Thumper, so its real flexible for different situations. Like high wind.

I set up cross wind on a huge cut cornfield late in the afternoon. I let a loud 30 second sequence rip and sat back to watch. I was shooting a Remington 700 in .223, and had failed to anchor a nice dog last week. I had my gun on my sticks, and was looking downwind. I had Predator Supreme decoy set up about 50 yards in front of me.

I had just started my second series on the Verminator when I saw 2 'yotes coming across the field from the upwind side, trying to get downwind of my decoy. I tapered off the call and got ready to shoot. At 150 yards out the lead dog paused and I shot. He went down, popped up spinning, and bolted. I shot again and missed. He made it around 50 yards and piled up. I saw his partner fly into the forest on overdrive. I tried to call him back, but no luck.

What I'm getting at is if you need a little extra volume without going too far, the Verminator may be the call to try.

The hit was perfect, and he still got up and ran. This is my first year callin' with a .223 and a new 22-250. The 250 bangs 'em down good, but I'm not sure about the .223. Anyone else not bang-floppin' with the .223? I was using a hotly handloaded 55 grain Sierra gameking. I usually shoot a .243.

Have a good one, Sleddogg

sleddogg,
Now that is a big coyote! My congratulations to you sir. Your question in regard to caliber choice is argued all of the time, or at least it seems like it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I have killed a heck of a lot of coyotes with a .223, and I like your choice of bullet. When I moved up to a .22-.250 I started taking longer shots, and therefore started losing more coyotes. When I moved on up to the .25-06 and .257 Ackley, I have never looked back. I do get some fur damage, but my coyotes get dead real quick. Not many runners. Everything is a trade off ain't it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Congrats on the big dog sleddog. The Verminator Thumper has been a favorite of mine for a couple years now. It does take a bit more air to blow it, but like you said, it gives a bit more volume in return. I know the Colo. coyotes like it, and some Colo. coyotes learned the hard way to hate it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Great story and pic! Thanks for sharing. Dont give up on the .223 Sometimes it happens. I blew a yotes chest in half wth a FMJ and the hole was as big as my foot, he ran 400 yds. Crazy, jerryboy

Nice looking dog. Good story on the thumper call. Been looking to buy both the thumper & tweedy for awhile now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

About 95% of the coyotes I've shot this year have been with a .223. I've had only 2 out of over 40 this season attempt to get up. One was just last weekend. The shot was straight up his tailpipe. He was spinning and may not have got up but he didn't "bang, flop" so I put another in.

The other time was a broadside shot early in the season at about 30 yards and that was with my 22-250. He ran about 75 yards. Thought I missed. Found him with a tennis ball sized hole on the far side. He was running dead and didn't know it. Last year I had the most and farthest runners using my .243. Go figure. Just happens sometimes. Coyotes are tough critters with more lives than a cat. LOL!

Oh yeah, I use a sierra 55 gr. HP in my .223. Rarely have fur damage and knocks their socks off.

Good hunting

I've been trying different bullets this year just to check preformance and here are my impressions of each:

45g HP- Instant kills when hit in the chest. No exit wounds yet and very little fur damage. Shot one bobcat that flopped for 2-3 seconds with complete penetration. .22 hole in and 3/4" hole going out.

55g FMJ- Tears the crap out of them. Fur damage is extreme. One dog shot in the chest quartering toward me at 110 yards was nearly cut in half. Bullet struck front shoulder. Shot one fox and bullet was straight through. Go figure?

55g SP- Good kills but some get up and go 10-30 yards. Others pop up and spin while biting the wound. Bullet goes through but fur damage isn't too bad. Shot one bobcat low in the chest and tore a huge hole in her. Poor shot placement on my part.

I don't reload and like to shoot the above ammo as it is cheap and shoots under an inch in my gun (5 shot groups). My opinion of the .223 is that it is a great caliber but over 300 yards and in the wind it looses some of it's appeal.

Stoning an animal requires energy. For a .223 to fully expend it's power into the animal the bullet shouldn't leave. That is why, in my opinion, hollow points work so well. When the energy level is stepped up as far as caliber it only makes sense that the animal absorbs more of the energy, thus kills will be more impressive, and fur will rain down for minutes following a hit.
