Dumbest damm saying I've ever heard. LOL

Something we actually agree on.
Scary, isn't it.

I would bust a cap on him in a heartbeat if he was on land I could hunt.No signs up saying don't shoot the coyotes with collars on, then he would be fair game in my book!

WHAT? We, as in you and I, agree on this? That's more than scary. That's total BS! We can't have that. I don't EVER want that! You are evil. I am good. You like goats. I don't.

Oh and I wanted to give this back to ya. ---->

I think you left it the last time we visited.

At this time I would like to go on record as changing my mind. I now officially LOVE that saying! I may make it my new sig line.

Why's the collar on it ?
Got to be a reason.
I'd want to know the reason first.

I don't think I could shoot that one either. If for only this reason. Even though it's a "wild animal" some people have "wild" animals as pets, I did. I raised coons my whole life, and even though they were "wild", I would have been torn up if someone shot one of mine. Also why I can't shoot coons today, although I would fight for your right to hunt coons if that's your thing. If it's part of a research program, the data is probably invaluable.

Don't know brother.

Chupa

they killed one with a tracking collar right in my calling area this week.
but it was the wolf kind.
guess it got a critter gitter trap put out for coyotes.

Sure looks like a coyote to me, but I wouldn't shoot unless totally sure.

Unless the game laws say shooting radio collard animals is illegal, I wouldn't hesitate to do so. Sure the collars are for research purposes but mortality by a hunter or by some other means is still valuable data. Banded waterfowl killed by hunters provides tons of data to wildlife managers.

Most have moved to an internal tracking device for coyote studies. After the coyote is trapped a tube containing the transmitter and battery are places in the coyote with an incision.
Tracking collars fail and in some instances kill the coyote by starvation. Transmitter tagged coyotes will have an ear tag not unlike a sheep. Lots of studies in my area.

My friend shot one a couple of years ago.

I'm obviously not going to hunt the area without permission from the farmer and if it is his pet I wouldnt dare shoot it. In fact Id like to pet a coyote given the chance but if it's just a tracking collar I'd think thatd be a trophy. I've shot 24 leg banded ducks and geese and I know part of the information their looking for is how long on average they live and by which means they die. I know their research has greatly improved from what they have found from hunters. If its a tracking collar it surely has a number or website to report the kill and id think it would just conclude the research on that individual lol. They can always tag another one

Hmmm... Not sure what it is but I do not believe its a "tracking collar". Radiotelemetry collars are normally dull brown in collar. Researchers wouldn't want an obtrusive colored collar because it could cause possible changes in behavior.

If the collar is part of a research project, it will have contact information on the collar.

Mr. Downs, what coyote project is putting internal tracking devices in coyotes? Internal transmitters are really only used in aquatic or semi-aquatic critter (otters for example). Typical collars look just like the one on the coyote in your picture.

ive seen them bright yellow black and brown and tstick out like a soar thumb. internal transmitters are gettign very popular and are used in the elk herds etc

It's a yote with a tracking collar. Get permission from the landowner and shoot it. You'll probably be doing it a favor.

Several years ago here in Virginia the Game Dept. allowed a fox pen operator to put some coyotes in his pen. They put tracking collars on some of them and one was killed with the Property of Va. Game Dept. collar on it outside of the pen.
If that is a tracking collar, I can't tell from the photo, I'd guess the coyote is part of some kind of research and I wouldn't kill it, but that's just me.
I do use tracking collars on my hunting dogs and they are all bright colors.
