TSS vs. Everything Else

I have a Dead Coyote,a standard full choke, cylinder bore and a poly choke on an old bolt action 12 gauge. I'd like to kill a coyote with that old gun but I don't know. I guess that's the problem with having more than a few choices.

Last week I was hunting with Al Morris and Tom Austin was on the camera. Al shot a coyote with his crossbow and the coyote took off running at a high rate of speed.

I shot the coyote with a 3" 1-1/2 oz load of TSS #3 shot, the coyote instantly dropped to the ground. We ranged the dead coyote at 73 yards. I am pretty sure the coyote was hit with the TSS #3 shot at 66 to 70 yards away.

Al's crossbow bolt went in behind the shoulder angling to wards the back end of the coyote. The coyote would have been dead in just a few minutes without the shotgun being used.

Like everyone always says, and they are always right - you HAVE to pattern your own setup. You just can't take what works for someone else and assume it's going to work for your rig. Doing this work for TSS costs a bundle, too. Last year I spent hundreds of dollars just doing pattern testing. Other people can get some ideas, see how important the testing is, but they can't just use my results or they might be bitterly disappointed.

Great looking loads - even that super tight one is amazing. Do your loads use readily available hulls, wads and powder or is this one of those times when you have to order everything from BPI?

I’m a member of a TSS Group over on FB, the folks on there seem to have a good bit of knowledge about the shot. Lots of good loads turning out, as well, with several load developers.

Very interesting information, and the journey continues. I'm just getting starting in figuring out the "rig" stuff. It's fun to read and carry on....
