Turkey choke and ammo

Im going turkey hunting the end of march and need a turkey choke and ammo. Im using a semi that only shoots 3 inch. I went to Bass Pro Shop and I have no Idea of what is the best choke. What do you guys use? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I don't know what gun your putting it on, but even the inexpensive ultra-full turkey chokes seem to work well. I used one of Cabela's on my 870 3 inch gun for a couple of years before I went to a Mossberg Ulti-mag.

I would suggest that if you plan on shooting the Hevi-shot get the choke designed for that shot as it seems to work well together.

The actual gun and barrel length can make a little difference if you're really picky (like me) but a good start for a 3" .12 gauge would be a Kick's Gobblin' Thunder .660" and Winchester Supreme 1 3/4 ounce Hi-Velocity #5's in the 3" shell.

I use the Kicks Gobbling Thunder with Winchester Supreme 3.5 inch # 5 shot in my Benelli Super 90. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Im using a Hatsan Escort 12 gauge with mossy oak camo. It has a 28" and 24" barrels. Im using the 24" one, they use Beretta or Benelli moble chokes. I use this shotgun more than my 870 super mag because its semiauto. Its killed lots of ducks and geese this past season. My 870 is 3 1/2 but its all black does that make that big of a deal for turkeys? I was thinking about sending it off for a camo job. Also it has a 26" barrel with a turkey choke thats 28" is that too long or does it matter? I have friends that use their duck guns with 28" barrels. I would rather use my 870 because its 3 1/2 so I can use a bigger shell than the Escort. I need your help on what to do.

Nothing wrong with matte black with synthetic or satin finish wood stocks. As long as there isn't a bright shiney surface that glares and reflects light, you're good to go. Camo is fine, but not necessary by any means.

Not if it doesn't bother you too much. Shorter barrels are easy packing and fast handling in the woods/brush. But that isn't usually too big a deal and given some fore thought when setting up can be handled in advance. I hunted for years with a Remington 870 and a Browning A5 both with 28" barrels. I cannot remember the longer barrel ever costing me a gobbler. Would I switch back from my current rigs short barrels... nope. But I wouldn't hacksaw off a barrel because it is a little longer either.

If you just want to shoot more lead, then do so. But it isn't necessary at all to kill turkeys, or predators for that matter. A 3" gun will serve very well. With a good shooting rig 50 yard kills can be reliably made, and that is a long poke with a shotgun. Choose the gun that fits you best, handles effortlessly, and gives you joy. Worry less about the shell length.

Thanks GC thats great advice. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifI really like the Escort its light and easy to carry so Im going to use it. Where is the best place to get the Kicks Gobbling Thunder choke? Also can the same choke be used for coyotes and what load would you use.

I use an 870 with the Rem Turkey xtra full choke, not as tight as the Rem super full. I as for shells I used to use the Rem 2oz turkey loads and they patterned pretty good. A friend tried the Federal flite control turkey and they worked great for him. I tried them and there was a big improvement in my patterns. I am stuck with lead with the Rem choke. I would recommend getting one that can use the HD steel. The HD stuff would allow you to drop one shot size compared to lead and get more pellets on target without giving up pellet energy. Pattern your gun with 2 or 3 different brands/shot sizes to see what it likes best.

I have been using this same load in an 870 Remington for several years now. I also use the Kick's GT choke, only mine is a .665". It's quite the combo for turkeys!

Thanks guys for your help. I ordered a Kicks GT choke from Bass Pro Shop today. I cant wait till Turkey season gets here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

KICKS GT baby!
Been shooting & killing w/Winny Supreme HV (2oz load) 3.5" #5s out of both an 835 and an SBE.
Ordered them both from Wing supply way back when...
