Turkey decoys

yeah, works great for turkeys! no , but i have had foxes stalk them while turkey hunting. if he was mt coyote, hed have been dead six times. he'd run off, id call, hed come right back.

if you need a cheap easy decoy, get 2 squirrel tails a big white feather, and somekind of fur, about 6 inches in size. get a dowel rod or an arrow shaft, get a fur ball on top, and hand the squirrel tails and feather from it with some fishin line. the tails and feather give it movement with a little wind. and for some reason they seem to really key in on that white.

I once watched a video... maybe for Featherflex turkey decoys where they were hunting over them and a coyote charged in and hit one of them hard. Released it as soon as he bit it and continued into the bush. So I guess it could work but then again, I haven't heard of too many turkey hunters (previous post excepted) ever having predators come in to a set.

i have had coyotes come to my turkey calling and locating every year in ohio for the past 6-7 years.. we kill a coyote every year while turkey hunting and yes.. it will work.. the yotes really seem to zero in on the birds for some reason... we killed a double one year standing in the middle of a pasture field with a decoy out.. we were setting up for a call and started yelping and my hunting partner spotted two dogs coming at us.. when they got to within 150 yards they split up and one came from downlow and one from the otherside like they knew what they were doing and as the first one popped up my partner shot it at 40 yards and i spun around to kill the other one coming in hunkerd down stalking my decoy.. it was at 30-40 yards until the shot and i was allready on it when the gun went off and spun him for a loop with a 3 1/2 in turkey load.. he run less then 20 yards and piled up.. that was the first double i ever shot.. funny how things work out when you least expect it..

but yes, the turkey decoy will work for you if you try it and there are plenty of turkey in your area and the coyotes have gotten a good taste for them..
 
The point of a decoy is to get the coyotes attention focused away from the shooter. Doesn't really matter much what it is, a couple of white goose feathers tied to a branch fluttering in the wind, a squirrel tail doing the same thing, a commercial predator decoy such as the Predator Supreme, or a turkey decoy. Just give them something to look at while coming in and it'll usually work. Run a search of all the forums with the search word "decoy" and you'll get more reading probably than you want.

I call coyotes every year here in Missouri while turkey hunting. I've had toms go silent and melt away and wonder "what the heck" they were coming so well. Then a coyote pops on the scene. I witnessed a coyote snatch a jake gobbler that was working along a field edge to my calls once. The coyote exploded from the woods and grabbed that young gobbler and it was all over in a heartbeat. Had gobblers blasting gobbles from the roost and then shut up suddenly and sit on the limb for the next hour quiet because a coyote or bobcat came to the base of the roost tree. Coyote season (all predators actually) is closed in Missouri during the turkey season, so these guys get a free walk. Bobcats also respond to turkey calls and quite a few turkey hunters I know have had bobcats stalk into their gobbler set-up. My dad once had a red fox run over him as he sat cold calling turkeys. It was a rainy mid morning and the toms were silent. Dad set-up in a likely spot and was giving a few mellow clucks and purrs with the occasional longer string of yelps. The fox came from behind him and he didn't hear it, he said the first he saw of it was as it rounded the tree he was sitting against and jumped over his feet! It stopped about three feet away and swung around to look at him. Dad said he didn't know who was the more surprised... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
A few years ago I was using an inflatable Turkey decoy tied to some fishing line, and let me tell you it had some movement to it.

I had a Bobcat come charging out from around some brush and pop that decoy. It happed so fast I couldn't get a shot off at the cat. But it was a sight to see though..


I think Turkey decoys work great as decoys, I use one very often. Now I use a feather flex tied to some fishing lien and has some great movement with very little wind.
 
I used a turkey decoy one night on a full moon. I sat the decoy about 30 yards out in a cut bean field and I was using the AP-6 like a bird. After about 15 mins. I saw a coon go by me at 10 yards headed right for the decoy. When it was about 2 or 3 yards from it he stopped and I shot. Big boar coon for here (18 lbs) so I guess he thought he could handle a turkey.
 
I have a had a lot of luck with a turkey decoy and gobbler in distress tape on coyote and bobcats.
 
My brother-in-law was turkey hunting last year and a coyote rushed in and jumped on his decoy while calling.He shot the dogThats the first time I have ever heard of this.
 
pretty sure i called in a yote yesterday turkey hunting. Was calling a small open flat( opted for the .22-250 yesterday morning) and had something silvery run thru the thick stuff beside me. could have been a squirrel... a very very VERY big squirrel. must be all the acorns. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just wanted to say thanks to all. did not what i would get by asking but i'm glad i did. gj69 great pic, that absolutly rocks! tomorrows trick or treat for the kids, but wensday is wide open for my newly doctored up flock. im gona see if the birds will fly and if the dogs will bite.
 
Ya know, I just thought of something. You might want to make sure it isn't turkey season when you have that decoy out. First, you don't want some over anxious turkey hunter peppering you with shot. Second, you don't want some over anxious game warden slapping the linked bracelets around your wrist for turkey hunting with No. Four Buckshot! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif
 
na turkey season doesn't come back in until april here in nc, and we only have one warden per three countys plus i hang out with the one in my area. but im shure if he see me he will be asking "Puppy what in the @#$$@ are your doing" and then probaly laugh. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
