Turning a stand around on a warning/bark coyote (VIDEO)

I've ready a bunch of posts in the past about coyotes warning bark/howling on stand. Most advice is goes something like "Yep, that's a warning bark...you've been busted...pack up and move on." Well, that's not always the case. Sometimes they can be fooled. Other times you can stalk up on them and kill them while they are raising cain.

Watch this video clip from the other day. We had a big male coyote warning barking us on stand. I changed from Lightning Jack to Grey Fox Distress to Whitetail Fawn Distress, to Coyote Pup Distress to finally trick this old boy to go from Defense to Offense. My client, Connie Sutton, and I double team this coyote with two simultaneous shots and one dead coyote.

Hope you enjoy and maybe pic up a tip or two from it.

i like gunner's motto. kill'em til their dead. just curious tony why not send gunner out to pick a fight and bing him back in when the yote was out there barking?

I've had that backfire a few times, especially when it's not springtime when the coyotes are at their most responsive to a dog. When guiding, I can't take the chance of my dog spooking off a coyote, that is so close to being in my clients crosshairs. That's why I didn't.

Great question.

Nice work Tony. That's a good lesson to learn, I've called it quits in that situation, now I've got something new to try. Thats a nice big male for these parts.

Been there done that BUT i didnt get it on film LOL. great teaching tool Tony . Curt Barrett ( another FoxPro field staff member ) and i were out calling one day , Had a Large female giving us the warning bark from afar . we Had set up with Curt downwind of me about 150 yrds and we managed to trick the old girl with each of us doing a warning bark back at her on open reed calls .Curt put the smack down on her when she tried to sneak in for a look . It took awhile to get her to come in , but we both learned a valuable lesson from that set. I included the senario in my tips page posted over on the FoxPro web site .thats the best thing about Calling coyotes , lessons learned . Good job to you and your client for having the patience to WORK that coyote in and not giving up .

Thanks all. Patience really did pay off on this one. I almost always finish a stand with pup distress. It was great to actually see a coyote and how he changed when the situation went from prey distress to canine. It shows what we all picture in our head, when blindly switching to pup distress and producing a coyote.

Thanks...Tony

Fun to watch! Seems like the warning bark stands work out more than not, just have to be patient and pay attention to what is going on. Thanks Tony!
