Well im just starting and i have nobody to ask for...I dont understand when do you turn on the ligth when calling at nigth. Do you star calling an turn on the ligth at the same time? Or turn on and turn of every 5 minute? maybe this question was made time after time...sorry.

Thanks in advance!

We generally turn on our red lensed head mounted lights the minute we shut the truck door and turn to walk away. That has caused us to kill foxes as we walked to our setup by virtue of just seeing them mousing along a fence row down the field or somewhere along the way, you will pick up their eyes at a tremendous range then just sit down right there and call em to you. Once you hit them with the light, keep it on them, that way you are shielded, sort of hidden behind the light curtain. The red won't bother them.

It also helps if you stumble upon some skunks in their mating process(been there, done that). This actually happened to myself and two other guys this past Feb. Walking up a powerline road in the middle of the night, they assumed they had the right of way, so we let em have it.

When i get to were i am going i will shine the light around to see if i see anything. If i am hunting foxes i turn the call on as soon as i start calling. Coyotes i call about 5 min or so before i turn the light on. It might just be me but if i hit a coyote with a light at 150 yds he usualy wont come any closer so thats why i wait. If when i do turn the light on i hit them far out i will turn the light off and cal for few more min until i turn the light back on.

What happens if they are close by, or in a den, close to your set. They will look, see you, then be gone. I always shine first, there are times when there will be one out there looking at me as soon as I call.

I've had a ton of animals that resonded within the first 30 seconds to 1 minute. If you sit in the dark, you'll miss all those animals.

Always turn the light on BEFORE you ever start calling. It will save you alot of time checking out Reflectors, Deer, Signs, T-posts, and all the other critters out there. There is also alot of times when that Gimme is already standing out there watching you! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I always scan the area as soon as i leave the vehicle as i have many a time shot foxs in the first field lamped, if nothing is spoted in the first five or ten mins then the call will be used, some of the ground i shoot unless they look at the lamp you dont see them they blend in that well, when a fox is spotted i like to keep the lamp in front of them just enough to see them then lift it higher when i am about to take the shot, every one has different ways of lamping so just go with whatever works for you best ,and the best of luck to you
