Twist rate, Sierra 69 grainers in .223 Remington....

Having a Mini-14 accurized (heavy barrel) for coyotes. I want to be able stabilize the Sierra 69 grainers. Any opinions on optimal rifling twist rate?

Thanks,

Jordan

1 in 9 has always worked for me but a 1 in 8 might be better for your setup. I run bolt guns with 24" or longer barrels so a little faster twist might benefit your barrel length.

I'd stick to 1-9. That way you can still shoot the 50-55 gr varmint bullets when you want to. It was a pain for me to try and shoot the lighter pills from my old 1-8 and seems near impossible in y 1-7. 1-9 is a great all around twist

My 223AI is 1-9. I can shoot 69's easy and also 77 grain Bergers pretty good. Not to sure why the Bergers shoot good, but they do.

Who's doing the work and what ya having done?

I had a Savage with a 9 twist shilen select match barrel that shot Berger 73gr and 77gr lights out.69gr nosler custom competition shot good in it as well.

Built a 223 with a Shilen Select Match barrel, 1 in 8 twist. It's a one holer at 100 yds. 69 gr SMK's. Will shoot sub 1/2 MOA out to 400 yds and 1/2 MOA at 500 yds. Never bothered with lighter bullets. Built another in 22-250, with a 1 in 10 twist, same Shilen SM. Will shoot 69 gr SMK's in one hole at 100 yds, but was tough to get it right(150 rds). Just started with Sierra 52 gr HPBT MK's yesterday. H380, 37.8 gr, and 38.0 will shoot one very tight hole. .169" and .160" at 100 yds. 1 3/4" at 300 yds. Federal 210 Match primers. Was very pleased. Love it when it's easy. Buy a good barrel, it's worth it in the end. Cheers, Ottway

I'm shooting the Hornady VMax in 55 grain with a 1:7 twist 18" long Ambush Firearms 5.56 AR15. I get pretty good groups at 100 yards.

I shot my neighbors AR 15 which has a 16" barrel and a 1:9 twist rate and it shoot the Remington Accutip V 55 gr bullets well at 100 yards. Three shots were in the bulls eye and within 7/8" of each other.

I've been told that the longer /heavier bullets work better with a faster twist rate. I shot a few of the Hornady Vmax bullets that were HPBT and somewhere about 64 gr to 68 gr ( can't remember exactly how much they weigh) but they shot pretty good at 100 yards.

I like the ballistics coefficient on the Boat Tail Bullets.

This.....

I've got an accurized mini 14 with an 8 twist 20 in McGowen barrel. Barrel is a straight .750in no taper. ASI gas block. Trigger tuned to 3.5lbs. ASI recoil buffer. Bell& Carlson stock thats 3 point pillared to the action. I started with 62gr TSX and 65gr Sierra Gamekings but have gone down to 50gr NBT's and love them out of it.

I did find that I cannot shoot the rifle very well if I do not hold the for arm of the stock. That took me a long long time to figure out as well I had my rear ring come loose from the receiver a few times. Also a good idea to get a torque wrench for those little gas block screws to help ensure you don't strip one. Ya ask me how I know that.

Being that your in California, I would go with the 1-8 twist to give you more options with lead free and environmentally friendly bullets. (They need more twist than lead bullets)

It seems that the environment is pretty sensitive over there. You will need to do your part.
