People from western PA love to hunt. My father took the first two days of buck season off every year to take me and my brother out. I know the season dates have changed but it used to be the first Monday after Thanksgiving it started. Kids all had off from school. Can you imagine schools today giving kids the first two days of buck season off? There was a place I used to take my wife to called the Gateway lodge in Cooks Forest. The bar in that place had old black and white photos of hunters from way back when. 10-12 bucks hanging in a row with old guys wearing checkered flannel shirts, smoking and all carrying lever action rifles. You would be hard pressed to find a house in western PA without an old Savage model 99. Heck, I still have my 308 model 99.
 
99 in 303savage still in the safe here. But I haven't shot a deer with a rifle in 30+ years. 1st Monday is still a no school day for all districts around here. Not near the participation as there used to be though. I blame it on land access and predicted so decades ago.

I completely agree with you about the situation in PA. It is a shame really. That is really where I developed my taste for hunting. Started hunting in 1982 in PA. Back then you could walk out your door and hunt squirrels and grouse for miles on end if you were a kid.
