Two Coyotes kill a Buck.

Timely post, HSL. I just posted this over in Predator Biology:

I was throwing out some old Field and Stream that was given to me and stumbled across this little window caption:

This might explain why my uncle's deer hunt lease in north Florida has seen a marked reduction in deer numbers the last 2 years and there does not appear to be any disease in the area.

The last two Thanksgivings, I've seen as much coyote sign as deer sign at the lease. They are LOADED with deer and deer sign as everyone at the club has food plots and feeders. My uncle has invited me up to see what this calling thing is all about. While I'm no expert, I hope to show him the tools of the trade so that his club can get their deer numbers up and coyote numbers down.

Makes a bullet or arrow seem amazingy clean. That is a lot of suffering. I think it is only two coyotes, and one does most of the work. You can watch their bellies getting full.

Going to kill some this weekend!

will say "it's natures way" which is true. We just usually don't see it happen.
Animals do die in many ways that are worse than by our bullets, which hopefully are a swift and efficient means.

I gotta wonder if the buck was possibly hit by a vehicle or had some other misfortune and the coyotes finished it off.

I thought a couple of those pics looks like the bucks hair had signs of road rash.

A big, mature healthy buck seems like it would be quite a match and risk for a couple of coyotes. Healthy being the key word.

I dunno. Just wondering out loud.
 
Wow, amazing pics- Im also with doggin on this one. I can understand a pack of yotes taking one down such as that but not 2.... i dunno just an opinion
 
That is incredible that the buck stayed in front of the camera the whole time. What was it feeding on? Was there food that kept the deer there?
 
I don't think the buck was injured, the blood in the first Picts could be from the coyotes first attack. I have seen were coyotes will go for the butt first. Still amazing, there is growing research that coyotes prey more on deer than biologist used to believe.

Defiantly nature, but still hard to watch.

It reminds me of the outdoor life photos of Eaten Alive, were a lone wolf eats 20 pound of meat off a doe's hind quarters while she lays there and watches.
 
Best photoshop job I've ever seen. Surprised there weren't a couple black panthers in there. Just kidding. Deer really appears to be sick he's awful poor. Probably blue tongue or something.

I don't think so in this case, that he was hit by a car. He may have been sick, but appears pretty well proportioned.

The wounds progress and grow throughout the photo series & although you don't see much of the actual attack, the wounds are indicative of the type a coyote inflicts when bringing a larger animal down.

Also interesting was the pecking order in which the coyotes feed on the deer after it is down. The dominant coyote goes first, and you can see his belly get full, then the next coyote comes is to feed....

Very interesting photo series. The size of the coyotes is also not remarkable. I killed one coyote that was 48 pounds and one that was 43 pounds down here in the desert in the past 6 weeks. Makes one wonder what THEY could bring down if they wanted...

Also, I have been calling and killing big "squareheads" using antelope distress sounds. When those big, dominant coyotes come in, they mean business, and know what antelope distress is.

THAT is the biggest crock of BS I have heard.

They KNOW that "nature" is altered from ever going back to the way it was. Too many things have irreversibly altered that path from now until the end of time. Examples are everywhere...

Like insecticides wiping out whole eco systems.

Like the screw worm erradication priogram that more than 10 fold increased the deer populations in some areas.

Like feral hogs by the millions being an invasive species and competing with EVERYTHING now.

Like civilization moving out large predators that keep the small predators in check...

The list goes on...

But, the greenies want to make $$$$$ on the BS they are spouting, and they do. Go look at ANY of the websites related to "putting nature back in charge" , and you will see where they readily solicit donations for their cause.

The second motive they have is to put Americans OFF of public land, and make any form of hunting, fishing, trapping, or even driving through public lands illegal....AGAIN follow the dollars....

THEY want be be named the "managing conservators" of the land (for a hefty fee of course).

The programs that the greenies push are failures, pure and simple. They do NOT have any sort of a track record of success with their programs from wolf introduction to huge failures like the solar green energy programs that are certainly failures of epic proportions. They ran him to death. Look at the tonque hanging out. He was exhausted. The wounds are from the coyotes biting the hind quarter as he slowed down.

I seen it one other time when I was on a deer stand a doe came by tonque hanging out about exhausted. A few seconds later a coyote came through right on her trail. I bet the coyote got her.

in the first few frames there seems to be some road rash in the flank area. its amazing to me that he stayed in front of the camera that long also... alot of stress and shock will drive them to water.
