Two Grendel Thermal Coyotes

Well, I finally broke a very dry spell. Haven't been seeing many coyotes at all throughout the summer. I began hunting in August and got one on the 30th but since my computer was down, I didn't post it. Early morning of November 13 I got another one, a male. Both were taken with the 6.5 Grendel and 90 gr. Varmageddons, and the old Pulsar Apex XQ38 thermal scope. The scope is still going strong, though the night of higher humidity did lessen the clarity somewhat.

The August coyote ran (unusual for a Varmageddon) on me and I fired two more shots at he quickly departed the field. He made it maybe 40 yards over the knoll.

The November coyote dropped on the spot, as is common with the Varmageddons. He weighed 34.5 pounds. Distance for both coyotes was 60 yards.

I have been packing gear to the shack via my truck, then driving off to the barn to park about 300 yards away and then walking back.
The last two hunts I have taken the 4-wheeler just to change things up a bit. I park it behind the shack. This is an old 1996 Honda Fourtrax 300,
still in great shape since I have taken good care of it. New tires and a starter is all I have done to it.

Nice work. Thanks for posting. I had an 86 fourtrax. That was the first year they came out. What an improvement from the old 3 wheelers. Wore it out, but I wish I had it back in as good a condition as yours is.

Good job on those coyotes and a really neat setup you have there. I'm anxious to pull my Grendel back out of the safe once Hornady starts making the Hornady 100gr ELD-VT ammo available.

Flint, those old Fourtrax were hard to beat. The only thing I have done to it since Dec. 1995 is replace the starter and tires. The tires on it are relatively new, and a better tire for gripping.

BC, I like the Grendel a lot. I handload which helps keep a supply of ammo going. For coyotes I tried three different bullets before settling with the 90 Varmageddon.

First I used the Sierra 100 gr HP, and while no coyotes made it out of the field, it just didn’t anchor them the way I wanted. Too many runners, yelping etc. Then I tried Speer 90 gr TNT’s - same thing, just didn’t put them down fast. Last I tried the 90 gr. Varmageddons and Bingo, that bullet consistently drops them right there. The first coyote in the video is the sole anomaly, and I think the reason is I didn’t wait for a broadside, and took him quartering to me.
