Ultimate Long Range Coyote Rifle

I am in the market for a new rifle and I was wondering what you would consider as the best long range rig. Hopefully a commercial caliber and not a wildcat. I am well healed in the 300 yards and in dept. But am looking for the ultimate in reaching out there.
Flat trajectory is a plus.

You don't define how long range? Out to 600 yards my vote would go to a .243 shooting a 80-90 grain bullet or a 25-06 shooting a 115 grain bullet. If you want to consider another one chambered by savage is the 6mm BR with a 105 berger VLD you could make some tiny groups out to 600 yards for sure as well.Very efficant and very high BC rating of this bullet!

A 25-06 is a great round for long range and you loose little over the higher exspense one would have in the .275 weatherby, the 25-06 is a good flat shooting caliber and with a 115 bullet you have a nice BC for wind and ranges to 600 yards, draw back is more kick than the .243 or 6mmBR meaning you get to see less of what happens through a scope above 10X at those longer ranges.

I would vote for the .257 Weatherby. Mine shoots 100gr Nosler BT's at 3850 fps. To me that is a significant gain over any 25.06 I've ever seen. Don't get me wrong I really like the 25.06, but my custom Weatherby just absolutely smokes them.

I am wanting about 600-800 yards. I have made some shots at over 500 yards with my 25-06 and I love it. It is just one of those senarios where I have some Credit at cabelas and even though I don't need another gun it does not stop me from wanting another.

That gun in the picture looks like a ruger action? Did you have it rechambered.

Yes, that is a Ruger Action, but the barrel is a Douglass Premium Match Grade 30" barrel. It is the ultimate long range coyote rifle, ultimate on deer and lopes as well.

25-06 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif It also works good on deer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm not a 600 to 800 yard shooter normally but when I have messed around a little at that range it seems that wind drift on the lighter bullets is a real problem more so than bullet drop which is easier to calculate in my opinion. Gravity being a relative constant where ever you are on earth more or less. So I would lean towards a heavier bullet in the 180 gr range whether it would be a .308 for mild recoil or a 300 mag or larger of some type. Both shoot the heavier bullets that are less affected by wind drift than the lighter bullets. I'm not an expert just played around a little at 500 to 1000 yards here in Wyoming where the wind is a constant enemy of long range shooters.

Go big... or Go home. The "Ultimate" is hard to nail down... but a 7 RUM scooting 168 Bergers is mighty tough to beat. My long range coyote gun (and deer, and bear) is a .300 RUM running the 210 Berger. Haven't killed any coyotes with it yet... but it hammers on steel and rocks mighty well out to 1000 yards or so.

The .25-06 on the other hand... will get you your 600-800 with the 115 Berger, without all the noise of the big gun. Mine shoots the 115s close to 3200... and with the .525 BC, it makes it a viable 1/2 mile round.

No matter what round you choose... shoot the highest BC bullet you can... drop is easy to calculate... wind will eat you lunch.

Since you mentioned "600-800 yds", then a .284 caliber would be my choice. Tough to match the knock down power and trajectory afforded by them without unduly punishing yourself.

The 7WSM has super duper ballistics thanks to high b.c. .284 bullets like the 162 AMAX and 180VLD. Get either one of those going 2950fps+ and research the numbers.

Runners should not be an issue...

I actually had that problem.

I was shooting mostly feral dogs and some 'yotes on a cattle spread during calving. They raised pedigreed Kobe beef.

I was using a 15 pound 300 Win Mag target rifle and the bullets were traveling well past the property lines. None of the bullets that were suitable for long range, would open on a 30 to 40 pound dog.

The owner offered to pay for a new rig, and I bought a Remington Sendero SF-II in 264 Win Mag, and scoped it with a Leupold MK4-M3 scope with a custom cam.

I shot 95gr V-Maxs at 3750 fps, and it is awesome.
