Ultra sonic brass cleaner and bolt carrier

In the army we did some way out things to get our rifles clean so we could go to bed. Like soapy water.

I was wondering about putting the bolt carrier group into a ultra sonic cleaner?

cleaning my BCG in an ultrasonic was one of the best investments i've made into cleaning gear - especailly now that i have my suppressor.

after just a few mins the carbon buildup all but wipes right off. no more scraping bolts for me!

[beeep] tempting to save up for one of the Hornady Hot tubs so i can drop whole uppers in there (sans scope of course)

ive never used one for brass, i have a stainless tumbling setup i use for that, however a local shop uses an ultrasonic for brass cleaning and gets great results. its a matter of quantity i guess, and how big of an ultrasonic you have.

i just bought a cheap-o from HF and when it eventually dies off, will replace it with a good one. i'm still glad i did it.

I don't have one yet. I was thinking of buying one for brass and thought, hey, what about....

I use the Hornady 2L sonic cleaner for all my AR parts, and bolts. I use the parts cleaner instead of the brass cleaner. Works great I use strictly distilled water and it almost works like magic.

I bought one mainly to use for cleaning scuba regulators when doing maintenance but it can also be used for brass, gun parts or most anything else.

thats the unit that the local bait shop/hunting store down the road uses.

as i said, i bought a HF one for budget reasons for testing as i was unsure of the results i would achieve. once it dies i'll definitely look into something of higher quality for a long term investment now that i'm spoiled by it

I was planning to buy one fro HF. then i got talking to some guys who serviced their own gear.

Most of them had started with the HF units, found that they were under powered & ended up buying better ones. Some much better -and more costly- than the one that I bought.

the one I bought was one of the recommended models for the DIYer. If I had a shop & was servicing gear every day then something even better might be warranted but for my needs this is plenty.

for dive gear parts, distilled water. Simple Green or Dawn.

I haven't used it for brass yet so no idea what solution to use.

if you're gonna do brass make sure you use a solution designed for brass specifically. it'll make sure nothing bad chemically happens during the cleaning process.

i haven't done any ultrasonic yet for brass, just use it for parts right now, but that's because i already have a rotary wet tumbler setup.

i know products like the hornady brass cleaning solution may seem expensive, but once you get into the dilution factor and realize how much actual cleaning solution you can get from a quart, it looks quite a bit more reasonable

hornady for example, mixes out at 40:1 so a quart of concentrate makes 10 gallons of cleaning solution for you.

it also appears that the same mix of lemi-shine and dawn that i use in my rotary tumbler could be very workable solution, but again i havent tried it yet. Maybe i'll give it a whirl with a small batch of brass - i've got about 60 450 bushmaster cases that need cleaning.
