US High School Bans American Flag

Y'all can think of me what you will, but this one turns my stomach. I've had too many folks in my family shed their own blood for this flag. I've shed tears at my Uncle's funeral when the Marines folded his flag and handed it to my grandmother, and other times to some of my aunts, and I've come close to tears watching that flag climb up a flagpole on an occasion or two.

And for a school to come out and tell kids they can't wear the flag, that we've all pledged our allegiance to, before God and Country, that just hits home to me what sort of world and country this is becoming. I've got a brother that's still out there - giving his own blood, sweat and tears every day, in Iraq, Korea, and wherever else Uncle Sam sends him. And it absolutely makes me sick to think that THESE are the sorts of folks he puts his life on the line for every day. And every day it seems there's more of 'em.

I don't want to get too far off the deep-end with this, but it just really hurts - deep down inside. If it was my kid, I'd have taken the day off work and been down there, sitting next to my child if need be, and DARE any of 'em at the school to complain about my kid wearing an American Flag if they wanted to.

I can see and somewhat understand if they want to prohibit flags from other countries -- this isn't those countries, and we haven't sworn allegiance to any other flags. But don't tell kids they can't wear Old Glory to school if they want to.

This really makes me sick.

High School Bans American Flag
Tuesday, Sep 11, 2007 - 11:56 PM Updated: 06:40 AM

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. - On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, students at one high school were not allowed to wear clothes with an American flag.

Under a new school rule, students at Hobbton High School are not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States.

The new rule stems from a controversy over students wearing shirts bearing flags of other countries.

Gayle Langston said her daughter, Jessica, was told to remove her Stars and Stripes t-shirt.

“Today she wanted to wear her shirt, and I had to tell her no,” said Langston. “She didn't like it at all because I knew it would get her in trouble. Of all days, 9/11, she could not wear her American Flag shirt.”

The superintendent of schools in Sampson County calls the situation unfortunate, but says educators didn’t want to be forced to pick and choose which flags should be permissible.

You are not the only to whom this garbage makes you sick. And the PC stuff has gone clean over the edge
beyond sanity and reality. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

WHAT?????????????????????????

That is almost too ludicrous to bear comment.

On the other side of the coin they did not ban flying the American flag. Perhaps it could have been because of the kids that said If I can wear a flag on my clothes it would be ok to wear the one Germany used during world war two. Or perhaps it was because of the kids whom thought it was funny to wear our flag on the behind of their pants.

Come on get real.

The article has an update that the school principle and superintendant have since had a change of heart and have rescinded the ban on kids wearing the American flag on their clothes.

But in my mind I can't help but think that's most likely due to public pressure and feedback - and if so, cool - but it still really stinks that there's people like that out there in the first place -- AND they're teaching our kids.

I am probably just too old, but I still haven't gotten used to people wearing the flag as an expression of patriotism. When Springsteen, Willy, etc. all started wearing the flag it just was't right. I am not doubting their love of our country or anything like that. I guess I always felt wearing the flag was/should be part of a uniform-- EARNED !! (military, law enforcement, firemen, and etc.) I think it degrades the flag to see it on someone's rearend. Display the flag absolutely, on your person-earn and deserve it first. I don't want to offend anyones love of this country, or their expression of it, but our flag should be held in high esteem, not as some personal fashion accent.

As for the school, it was only doing what was imposed on them from the state level. It looks like that is being address real quick.

I agree 100%

This country is going to hell in a hand basket really fast.If the teachers or any other person is affended by the US flag send them somewhere else.I'll put money in that pot for a ticket. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I beleive the flag should be treated with respect. There are some times I have seen it on clothes and it was disrespectful. However banning the wearing of a flag on school property is unacceptable in my eyes.

They should just say it has to be displayed in an apropiate and respectful mannner and have the balls to say what that manner should be.

Just my two cents worth.

I Agree 100% Tarry,
I myself have not served in the military but I do have a few shirts that have the American flag on them.

At my work we all wear red on fridays, I often wear a shirt that has a flag on it. I can assure you that it is not a fashion statement & I don't wear something like that just because everyone else does. I wear it to remind myself of the great country that we live in & as a personal symbol of respect for the people that have fought & are fighting for my country.

Not sure why anyone would be surprised by this. Government "educators" are brainwashing millions of their lemmings to hate America for all the "evil" she has done. For her symbol to be disrespected in these indoctrination centers is the tip of the iceberg. If you love your children get them out of their government school TODAY.

I bet this stems from all those foreign pukes who insist on attending our schools while wearing the flag of there country of origin. I can see how in this PC torn country of zero tolerance that it isn't "fair" to allow chillin to wear the American flag while not allowing them furriners ter wear their colors. But I do agree with those who say the flag isn't something to be worn, but displayed. Two very different concepts.

Back in the 60’s didn’t the government threaten to arrest people who wore the flag as clothing? While I have a couple of hats with the flag on them that are very respectful, I have seen the flag worn in ways that are anything but respectful. I don’t think the school has it out for the American flag. I think they were caught up in trying to make their rules fit several different cases.

I do not like it when the flag is used for commercialism, political posturing, or endorsement of anything! Flag style clothing is not tasteful to me. I cannot believe the number of people that do not know how to properly display the flag. Please do not use it for endorsement and if you are going to display it, for godsake learn how to display it properly!

In my mind, being a United States Citizen qualifies you to wear a nice, respectable flag on you clothing (patch, pin, hat, etc.)

My late mother, wore a small US flag pin on her work uniform at work. She was never in the military, on a police force, member of a fire department, etc. etc. She was just a simple caferteria worker. She simply stood behind her family while her husband, her brothers, her sons and sons-in-law, served military assignments throughout the world, from WWII on up. If she were alive today, I know she would look you square in the eyes and say...I know I EARNED IT! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I was thinking somemore about this, as I do feel it is a very important issue. So for my own continued education I looked up the US Code regarding the U.S. Flag. Interesting info, wish it was taught in our schools.

redhound,
I am sure your mother was a great patriot, in fact your description of her wearing a "lapel pin" shows how she did respect our flag, and the proper display of it according to the U.S. Code.

http://www.access.gpo.gov/uscode/title4/chapter1_.html

Sec 8 (j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

Classic Liberal mentality found in our schools. They don't have the balls to take a stand for what's right. In fact, they don't know what's right, or wrong. They want to appease, molly coddle, make everyone equal, so everything is fair for everybody. There ain't a real man in the entire system.
