I remember in 2004 the Army was going to the XM8 and variants. Big write-ups in the Army Times, but nothing ever came of it.
I agree that the M16 platform is a good standard issue weapon when trained proficiently with it. Of course that doesn't mean everyone should carry one! Mission specific is what I say. At times a shotgun is the best choice and as it is, they have their place as well as the m14s, MP5s, AKs, 249s, 240Bs and everything else being carried currently today.
Those that bashed the 16 mostly bashed it for knock-down. Then out comes the 6.8spc. I agree that a caliber change is more likely than a weapons platform change. Especially since the M16 platform is so versatile.
