Use HPBT match ammo to hunt effectively ?

Are Sierra hollow point boat tail match ammos effective for use against game (ie. 52gr upto 190gr ) ? Perhaps where bone crushing penetration is necessary ?

What about using the 52gr HPBT for small varmint and 190gr HPBT for critters that would otherwise best require partitions, Barnes XBT's, failsafe bearclaw etc. ?

The Sierra HPBT Gamekings are very good bullets for deer and antelope. I have gotten complete pass throughs on deer and antelope out to 350 yards.
The match bullets are not constructed for use on game and will not give consistent performance so should not be used.
Use of match bullets on coyotes should not be a problem, they will either blow up without much penetration or punch right through without expanding.
On large game like elk the 190gr Gamekings (I assume you are talking 30 caliber should be fine on broadside or shots with a good angle to the vitals). They will not give the kind of penetration you would get with a partition or Barnes X bullet on shots from a bad angle.
Do not use the match bullets on game. Try the Gamekings you should be able to get very good accuracy from them and surprisingly good performance on game.

I loaded up my dad some 180 grain Game Kings for a 30/06 a few years ago. He shot a wild hog that weighed not quite 100 Lbs in the neck from 80 yards. These bullets were an older batch, at least 12 years old. The bullet made considerable damage to the neck tissue inside the hide and exited. Hogs have very thick skin not too different that an elk's hide. I was amazed just how much that bullet came apart. Upon boning it out I noticed that a front leg bone was freshly broken and a chunk of lead was resting against it. That shot was broadside pass through the neck and yet a fragment large enough traveled down the neck into the leg with enough force to cause that kind of damage. I would use it on an elk only I wouldn't want to have to try to force it through any thick places or the rumen to get to the vitals.

.This is the exit hole of a deer was shot with a MatchKing bullet. For a bullet that blow's up on contact or pencil's through.Work's for me... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Have never had Match bullets fail yet. We use 168 match in our .308 sniper rifles for deer and I can tell you that I have never seen a bullet that kills like this one! May not work for everyone else but works for us. I shot a doe at 100 yds looking at me from a slight angle. Put the bullet just to the left of her left leg. The bullet went in on target and exited out or should I say blew out between the ribs on the other side. Hole was big enough to stick your head in. Did not have to even gut her. Everything was hanging out of this hole! Match bullets in the .223, 22-250's, and Swifts are pretty bad news too.

Boyd,
That is definitely a dead looking deer.
I am curious, what was the range when you shot it?
For me, I would call that bullet blow up. I have seen the same kind of holes caused by ballistic tips at high velocity.
Sounds like from the responses some guys are having luck using the match bullets, I prefer not use them and the big hole in the deer in your photo is good evidence as to why. Was there much bloodshot meat in the shoulders or did they come out ok?
I wouldn't use a .223 to shoot a deer either, but lots of folks do and have good success.
To each his own I guess, like they say, "at what point in the deers death did the bullet fail?".
There is another thread here talking about using the 100gr Sierra match bullet on coyotes and describing how they just punch through and don't expand much.
Kinda seems like some folks are experiencing the match bullets blowing up and some are experiencing them pencilling through.
I guess the problem for me remains that in my opinion the match bullet will not give you consistent performance on game.
I guess we just agree to disagree on this one.
Have a good one!

That deer was shot at 75 yard's with a 168gr MK out of a 280 Rem.But it does'nt matter.75 Yards or 750 yard's.They all look the same..Small hole going in,and A BIG hole coming out... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
