Used gun value

Can anyone tell me where to look to find used gun values. I went to our local gun shop the other day and my cousin was asking the guy about a Winchester Model 70 .270 that he had just got in a trade. My cousin was just curious as to what it might be worth and the owner told him that since Winchester sold the rights to some of their firearms that a used one would be worth as much as $700 and new would be around $1000. I have priced several guns in this shop and he is pretty close to the rest of the shops around here but I think he may be a little high on this one. I have the same gun and love it but if he would seriously give me $700, its [beeep] tempting to trade it in on something I might use more often. If someone here maybe owns their own shop and could give me an idea how close he actually is to the guns value or maybe could tell me where to look id greatly appreciate it. Thanks Josh

To be honest it is worth what ever some one will give you for it. Prices go up and down so much here the last few months. Look on gun broker and see what there bringing now. That will kind of give you a good idea. If someone tells you its worth say 1000.00 and you try you butt off to sell it but no one will buy it then in my eyes its not wort a 1000.00 you sell it for say 800 then i would say thats what it was worth. I will tell you this i buy and sell a lot of guns and this is not time to sell right now there not bringing near what they should.

Thanks for your reply. If I were to get rid of it right now I would more than likely just do some trading with that guy. If your gun looks new and you have all the paper work and box he will give you full value of the gun towards trades. My cosin came across an older Ruger Mark I while we were there and asked him about trading his High Point .40 and the guy told him if he still had the box and all the paperwork and the gun looked new he would give him full price towards a trade. So we went back to town got the gun and other goodies, went back out there and sure enough the guy gave him exactly what he payed for the gun six months ago. So basically my cousin got to try out the .40 for six months at no charge. I had never heard of anyone doing that before bc I figure a gun was like everything else, once it leaves the store it loses value. The shop owner also gave my cousin full value for some of the ammo he had left over. Between the gun a ammo my cousin ended up walking out of there with the Ruger for $75. We both figured he would use the .22 alot more for rabbit and squirell and theres a good chance the Ruger is a one of a kind with the work done to it. And the gun is a [beeep] of a shooter to boot. If hes doing it like that by all means buy from him on everything. his breed well there is not many around like him. Every place i had delt with your lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar. Once in awhile you find a place that gives 75 cents on the dollar but not many. I have never seen any one give 1.00 for 1.00. I bought a new bushy predator gave 1000.00 for it a month later i had a tast for something else. So i went to the dealer that does my ffl trans to see if he wanted to do some tradeing on something. He wanted to give 350 to 400 for the predator. Needless to say it came home with me.

Yeah I never would of thought he would of gave full value for the gun especially since it had been shout but I guess he figures if he makes his customers happy well keep coming back. He seems like a pretty good guy to deal with and I like the way he prices his guns. He already adds the taxes in so the price you see on anything in his store is the price you pay. And to be honest I actually think he is a little bit cheaper than everyone around here bc noone else has the taxes figured in and the prices you see are about the same. Not to mention he is only two miles from my house so theres a convenience factor to boot.

Sounds like you have a win win deal with that guy. Sure would like to se someone like that come to my area. Everyone around heres is proud of there stuff. The only retailer that was pretty good on price was sportsmans warehouse and they shut the doors. Gander is really hitgh on firearme so i have been buying off of gun broker for awhile now. You can pick some pretty good deals up on there some times. Right know the guns are not bringing what they did a month ago. i think everyone is holding onto there money to see what happens with the num mutz on the hill. I do know one thing i sure have done my part at helping the economy. And getting ready to drop some big money on a couple scopes.

Cathntr, You can always use the Blue Book of Gun Values as a base to determine your own worth. I would not recommend Gun Broker as the dealers on that site more often than not price their guns intentionally high to see if they can lure in unknowing buyers. It is the same on Guns America. Hope this helps

Cathntr, When I'm trying to figure value on a firearm, I will look several places (Gunbroker, Bluebook, etc) and try to keep the following in mind...

The Bluebook is subject to a publishing time lag and local market will fluctuate much faster, as will the national rate.

Gunbroker is flooded with commercial dealers and it will depend on the number of current bids in progress... Those that are only listed by price with no bid history are usually too high.

If it is a "high value" type weapon, there are usually internet forums that you can 'eavesdrop' into and get an idea as to the popularity of a given item.

Finally, I will go to my local dealer and, while not asking him to buy it, get his opinion, as he usually knows his customers and what is most desirable to them as long as I remember that he is in the business to make a profit on his sales...and figure about 20% less than what he may have in stock of a similar item...

If, after all that research, I want to take that kind of price for the item, I'll list it for sale. If not, it stays in my safe....There are times when I want to move on to something else and will eat a little expense, but historically, the price will increase with time..and patience..
