Using Decoys

I've just gotten into calling coyotes. I've read in a few places that some guys just use their kids' stuffed rabbits or puppies or whatever. I've got 3 kids, hence lots of stuffed pets. Do they really work and what's the best way to use them?

Hi Casey, welcome to Predator Masters.

If you go back to the main page, drop down to "Other calling equipment" and then click on "decoys" there is some good info there.

Take care,
Daryl

Sorry Casey Coyote. I spent over an hour responding to your topic. (On and off) Then when I hit "enter" and it said "invalid password- use back button to re-enter". Real handy feature that erases everything you just wrote. Sometimes the site does not enter your password and you get this message. Sometimes it erases what you wrote and sometimes it doesn't. My fault though because this has happened several times before so normally I write the response off board in my mail to avoid this. Also happens once in awhile if you are writing and hit the back button to re-read something in the topic. I'm not sure what makes it happen. I have never had that problem at the other sites. Again, sorry. May re-write it later.

Later, Curt

Casey-

If you are going to take pictures of the Coyotes that are coming to decoys that's fine, however I find that it's just more stuff to haul around that's not needed. If a Coyote is close enough to see that decoy, then he's close enough to kill.

If you are calling open country, I agree with DOG CALLER. However, if you call brush, as I usually do, if the coyote does not see something to verify what he has heard, you may never know he was there.

Please go to the Photo Gallery, and read about the Wikieup hunt. We describe in it how coyotes reacted to my decoy.

where in Kansas are you from Dog Caller? I hunt in open country and brush. So I guess I'll have to experiment. I grew up in Northwest Kansas where it is as wide as it gets. I live in Northeast Kansas now and it it's all trees and hills and brush. The only two successes I've had is in Thomas County and Johnson County. Both as far apart in the state as you can damn near get. I love getting all these tips. Thank you fellas'.

Casey-
I live in eastern Kansas, used to live in Olathe for years, but I call Coyotes all over the west every year usually in Coyote Calling Contests. Even in the brush you shouldn't need a decoy, the grass is tall most years, you'd have to mount your decoy on a pole of some kind for any thing to see it. Location , Location and one more time Location is your key to calling Coyotes.

anything to make them come in a little closer, hold still a little longer, and/or gives em something to focus hard-in on other than me fixing them in my sights, and its "gold" to getting your numbers up.

(got my "wagger" yesterday too !)

Hi ya fellas, If it's somethin light and easy to carry ya want, try a white goose feather with about 5 ft of string. Just tie it or loop it arround somethin alittle higer than the terrian when yu get near your stand. Like a bush, tree, fencepost ect.
this will hold their attention, and they will usually come in to get a closer look. The wind will move it arround for ya. Just grab it on the way out, stick it in your shirt, pocket, pack or what ever. Light, fast, and cheep.
Ain't my ideal, Jimmy in Ky turned me onto this last yr, It's all I use, Hay atleast the price is right huh. JB
