USPS shipping firearms.

I need help finding the correct documentation on shipping firearms though the USPS.

USPS denied me to ship a firearm to an FFL in another State.

I insisted that they're wrong since I was shipping a long gun to a licensed FFL.

The manager said it needed to go to dealer to dealer. I told them they're WRONG and I'll be back on Monday to ship my long gun to an FFL.

I need help trying to locate the correct documentation so I can print it out and go back up their on Monday to correct their mistake.

I've search on the USPS, but haven't found what I'm looking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

Here's a start:

USPS - Shipping Terms & Conditions - Firearms
11.3 Rifles and Shotguns

Although unloaded rifles and shotguns not precluded by 11.1.1e and 11.1.2 are mailable, mailers must comply with the Gun Control Act of 1968, Public Law 90-618, 18 USC 921, et seq., and the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder, 27 CFR 178, as well as state and local laws. The mailer may be required by the USPS to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the gun is unloaded and not precluded by 11.1.1e.

11.4 Legal Opinions on Mailing Firearms

Postmasters are not authorized to give opinions on the legality of any shipment of rifles or shotguns. Contact the nearest office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for further advice.

Note that 11.1.1e and 11.1.2 refer to short barrel shotguns and handguns respectively.

Here's a better source from the USPS website, which has the same wording:

I've shipped several long guns via local USPS. I only had to show them a copy of the FFL. I ship with priority mail, insurance and delivery confirmation

I was questioned only once with the usps and they called the nearest post master general and he set them straight.
Been shipping usps no problem ever since.

I have only used UPS, so I can't help you.

Bet I have a good idea where that gun is headed though........

I haven't had any problems with USPS but the local UPS hub won't let me ship firearms, saying I need to be a dealer to ship. Bunch of idiots.

As posted, it is legal to ship a long gun to an FFL in another state via the USPS. I do it regularly here in the Grayling Post Office.
The first time I did it, I took a copy of the distant FFL to show them. The next few times I didn't need to do that. The Postmaster here understands the Postal Regulations, so there never was a problem.
I do read however that many Post Offices make up their own rules, and refuse to ship a long gun.
There is a phone number at the USPS web site that you can call to straighten out your local Post Office. I believe they are in Washington, DC. After telling them your problem, they will immediately call your local PO.

Recently I tried to ship a barrel by UPS & they refused to do it. I've always shipped with them because I could.
Now I was at an 'Office Depot' so that may be the difference.
Finally shipped it 'USPS' at same 'Office Depot'.
I don't know of any 'Fedex' near me but I'll sure be finding one.
By the way, I'm aware of the difference between a 'firearm' & a 'firearm part'.

Problem Mike is having is .......
His PO has their head up their rear. One clerk lets him ship and others won't. I'm guessing his PO is a little anti-gun.

Mike,
I have not found any good printed rules yet ,I'm still looking. I can check with my PO and see what he says on Mon.
Since I had to set them straight in the begining.

I had the same problem with mine the first time i shipped. I got them lined out now no problems. Stick with it they get paid to do there job so they need to do it. They need to ship it rather they like it or not. Go to ATF site under sending firearms and you will find the feds regs on shipping. I will see if i can find them again

This is off the usps site under regs click on the link then click mailaibilty then your info you want starts at section 11 By the way they have a hand book they look at that proves them wrong. Make them pull there regs book out and look. Thats what i did to my mail lady and she fought with me until she read it. Then no more problems

Mike. Look it up on the BATF web site its there. I did the same here they read it and still refused to send it. Got to be to much hassle so I went UPS. Maybe Martn4802's idea is best.
Good Luck,
Denny

When I sent my 597 to Remington, via UPS, for the re barrel job the lady behind the counter was very objectionable. She indicated that the driver may refuse the package.

In a very direct, curt fashion I asked her please explain to the driver that if he/she refused my package it would be the end his/her problems......the front end!

No problems.

I believe there are (some, not all) uninformed, arrogant, ANTIs employed at USPS & UPS who attempt to push their agenda. I won't tolerate it!

In retrospect I will not use the hard gun case for future shipping. A card board shipping box will probably draw less attention.

I ship Long guns and HANDGUNS USPS> all the time..
If you do a search on the net, you will find lots of info on how to do it..
If you provide the info, they will follow the rules..

Brasshound..

Mike
Find the information you need and stay with it until they do their damm job. To many times the turd behind the counter either doesn't know their job or chooses not to know their job. Either way, stick with it and let us know the outcome.

As far as the guys having trouble with UPS,, sometimes you have to go to a UPS distribution center, but they'll ship it. The franchises like "The UPS Store" have their own policies, and it's their choice regardless of whether it's a liability issue or a political one.
The USPS ISN"T a franchise or private business and for our own benefit we need to hold their feet to the fire and demand that they do their job...
Besides,,, it's actually FUN if it's an anti.
