Utah Bird hunting & Utah DWR

I dont know about everybody else but does it seem like there are very few places to go pheasant, chuckar, Quail, ect. In Utah? I remember as a kid limiting out every season. Family outings to hunt birds. Now its a all day hike to see one. and no more outings with friends and family. Plainly because there are very few places to go unless its a hunting ranch. Does it seem like the DWR turns there nose to Upland bird hunting in Utah? Because it does to me. I know alot of people I personaly know feel the same way just want some outside opinion.
 
Well i'm sure it comes down to money. You know money talks. They can bring in tons more money for big game, waterfowl and fishing then upland. I think they pay more attention to those areas to be able to bring in the revenue. I agree with you on it's kind of frustrating. And also with upland, we've kind of ruined all their breeding grounds so the population just keeps getting worse. I hope this will change and we can have some great pheasant hunting back.
 
There are still places to go if you want to pay. The problem in Utah is that hunting has become a big money maker for the property owners. It all started with the CWMU hunts. Then came the limited entry and premium limited entry as well as the tags that are auctioned off. Those with the money get preference in Utah. They planted the turkeys on private property and then found the land owner wont let any one in. The DWR has been trying to get their walk in access in Morgan and have found out the land owner has other ideas. Also like YFZDuner said. We keep building in the prime hunting areas and breeding grounds.

you know i work out at wasatch wings and clay in cedar fort, it costs money but our birds still fly like wild birds, not run like other places!
 
I dont really understand your statement of The dwr has turned up there nose to upland game hunting. Its not there fault that landowners sell the land to developers. Its the nature of the beast. Also with chuckars they have spent alot of money putting in guzzlers just for chuckars. The chuckars are all dependent of the weather if its a hot dry year the chuckars and other animals suffer. Im not arguing with you at all. I feel the same way when I was younger we would do really well. I havent chuckar or pheasant hunted for years and I miss it

Helipilotm is right. The DWR has spent a lot of money on guzzlers to help the Chuckars. Unless I am mistaken they have even planted them on the Wildcat mtns and maybe other locations in the past.The guzzler program has been a big success. Other animals also benefit from them. The land developers are the biggest problem. They have even moved up the mountain into the winter grounds for some of the birds, deer and elk. Pheasant is probably the only bird I have trouble finding.
 
Part of what I mean is Now days You will see more foxes Coyotes, House Cats, Magpies, Hawks and Eagles. The chicks dont have a chance. I know a few you cant touch but the others need to be ridden of. How come The all the States to the East and north of Utah have such great Upland Hunting when ours declines yearly. Im not saying that all parts of Utah are not good Hunting because there are still some good spots, but Its either private or a secret spot because other wise it would be flooded with people.
 
It is the habitat that is affecting it more than predators. When we keep building in all the areas that used to hold good pheasant hunting, what do you think the out come will be. Along the wasatch to the Great Salt Lake is developing fast. The states around Utah have better hunting and also have more predators. As far as controling the predators in Utah that is still on the land owner. Most private land owners will not let people in.

theres got to be something we can do about that reb, if we got together and put a good safe plan if you will call it that together to take out varmints from these rural areas where landowners are reluctant to lets us on. I would think it would be win, win. We get to go get some vermin and help the other species in turn landowners are happy. I for one would be on board for something like this!
 
I had an idea for doing something to get access and help the land owner. I just havent done anything with it for a while.
 
We need to get something in the works. We could accomplish alot of the footwork when we are out already calling and if we made a kill that day and they see that it might increase the odds of letting us help them! Let me know if you want to pursue it and need help Reb.
