VA Groundhogs

Hey guys thanks for the warm welcome. I am in the Thornburg/Massaponax area but hunt around Snell. Looking forward to knocking out a few coyotes soon. I've seen their carcasses on road sides all over the county this year. I also bought a Knight/Hale Triple Dawg caller, I will let you know how it works.

Shad are here now! A friend just called me from the river, water is a little high from the easterly wind below the fall line, but he caught a few.
I grew up hunting groundhogs in Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah, etc. It was pretty easy to kill several hundred a year back in the late 60's, before coyotes, and before farmers started bombing them!
The pigs in Madison are in the extreme eastern part of the county where they crossed rt. 15 near Mitchells....not many there yet, but a few.

Thanks for the update Flyrod. Hopefully this week's rain wont muddy the river too much. I did most of my varmint hunting in Loudoun in the 70s. F'burg hasnt been the same since Chesley's shut down...Is there anyone down there that carries shad darts like they used to?

Never fished or netted in the Rappahannock for shad or herring . Years ago I remember you couldn't keep the white shad has that been lifted ? I fished the Mattaponi River years ago and I would fill the boat up with both useing darts and spoons on lite tackle. I have fished from Ely's Ford to Motts landing numbers of times for smallies .

Ken's tackle shop on Lafayette Blvd. used to carry darts and spoons, but he sold out early in the season, and was slow to get new stock. I havn't been in there for a couple years, so I don't know how things are there days. Most people buy them at Greentop, or order them. I have no idea what Gander sells for shad, or Bass Pro in Ashland. I get so mad at Gander Mtn. about their ammunition/component prices, that I rarely go in the store....and it's only a mile from the house!

I'll ask a couple of folks if they've been to Ken's lately.
Everyone misses Reggie Chesley and the tackle shop! Too bad Karl couldn't keep it up!

WSR primer, Remington brass, 35 gr Vmax, 11.2 gr of H110. Many have suggested small pistol primers and Lil Gun for the powder, which i will try in the future.

Presently, I'm getting 1/4" groups at 100 yards and 1" at 200 yards.

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

FWIW, mines a Medallion as well.

Edited to add C.O.L. = 1.711" (I think? I'll have to check when I get home) Topics

Here's a quick snap shot of a three shot group at 100 yards. Love this rifle!
