OK I know I'm not going to have all of the details you guys might need but I'll give you what I have. A good friend of mines grandma passed away a couple weeks ago and I guess she still had her husbands colt 1911a1 from WW2. I haven't seen the gun so I am just going off of what he e-mailed me. He is not a gun guy to say the least, so I don't know if this info makes any sense or not.

He said it has a colt serial number but the slide says Remington on it. He also said it is a model 1911a1 and the serial number looks like it is from 1941. It was an officers gun and still has the leather holster made by Warren leather goods company 1918. I don't know anything about the condition of the gun. I haven't got any pictures yet.

If I was him I would never sell it but what do you do. I wish I had the cash to buy it off of him.

Thanks for any info or estimates on what you think it would be worth.

Remington on the slide? I know they had what I always called a Remington/Rand (spelling), Just don't know what years but was thinking earlier than that, let me consult the book

Yeah it says Remington on the slide but the serial # is a colt number. I would like it not be worth much so I can take it off his hands.

During WWII,remington, and many other companys built the guns for the Gov. My brother has one made by Singer (yeah the sewing machine co.) the gun wouldn't leave the family if it was mine, but some people have no attachment to guns as heirlooms. Ron

My father has a 1911 marked us government property Colt. Serial# dates it to 1917. It's in really good shape and a very cool sidearm. Where is a good site to find out more about it?

Remington (UMC) has only made 1911s once, they made about 21,500 1911s during WWI...Remington Rand (typewriter/office machine company - no affiliation with Remington Arms)made about 900,000 1911s during WWII (making them by far and away the most common Government issue pistol) .

Bottom line...there ARE Remington 1911s out there but they are rare in comparison to Remington Rands...

As a side note there were 1911s built by

Ithaca Gun Company (made about 400,000)
Union Switch & Signal (made about 50,000)
Singer Sewing Machine Co (made about 500 (making it the truly rare jewel among these pistols)

Colt only made about 400,000
