Vanguard Upgrades

I have a Weatherby Vanguard 270 with synthetic stock I purchased new around 1992. It grouped at a different point of impact from day to day. I had it bedded and trigger work done but it did not help. From what I have read the stock and trigger was not very good but the action is solid.

Pondering a stock and possible barrel change. Would a stock off of a series 2 Vanguard fit my action? or should I look at an aftermarket stock? I have read the Vanguard 2 stock is much better and there is one for sale for $110.

Also pondering having a Hart 1:9 25-06 fluted #2 barrel fitted so the barrel contour would be a little bit larger than stock.

I think you will be better served with a glass B&C. Get a varmint taper in case you decide to do the barrel later. The plastic stock on my mkv synthetic had pressure pads. I removed them and that helped.

I would look at getting a boyds laminate for $100 before I bought a vanguard S2 stock. That would be an easier stock to free float and much stiffer.

I may have to revisit this. I sent my bolt to Weatherby as part of their recall several years ago. It was to correct a situation where the gun could fire when the bolt not fully closed. It appears my gun may be able to fire with the bolt only 1/4 of the way closed. It does sound and feel like the firing pin is releasing when dry firing with the bolt not fully closed. The bolt also fully closes when dry firing.

If this is the case I may be looking for a Remington action.

I purchased a Howa 1500 around year 2000 with the synthetic stock as well. Point of impact moved around also. I discovered the cheap plastic stock was just junk even though I bedded it as well. I ended up buying a B&C stock, item number 6501-02, from Red Hawk Rifles. That stock took care of the problem and I did not have to glass bed it either. On my receipt it reads that the stock fits the Weatherby Vanguard and Howa 1500. The only thing with this stock, it is a Monte Carlo stock which I am not crazy about but the rifle now shoots 1 MOA and since this is a spare rifle I am good with this.
