Varget with a strong smell

Just opened a pound of Varget I have had for about three years. It has been stored in a dry box and as I said, had just opened it. It is not clumped or looks bad in any way. It just has a strong chemical smell. Is it safe to use?

It is NOOOOoooooo Good!

Send it to me so it can be safely disposed of...

... a little bit at a time, at about 400 yards!

.. that warning is 60 years old (post WW-2 surplus powder) and doesn't apply any more.

But if you ARE worried, send it to me

Don't you just love the smell of powder in the jug? When I was a young guy and stationed at the 29 Palms Magazine area, I always loved to go into the magazine with the prop charges. Imagine 5,000 155mm and 8" prop charges. Woo Hoo, great for a hangover or clogged sinus.

if the Varget smells acidic you probably have some that it going bad, just don't confuse the new smell of powder (unopened) with the acidic smell.

Myth #639

You will never find Varget going bad.

Powder that "went bad" was surplus powders that were made during the late part of WW-2 and because of the hurry, the nitrocellulose was not washed long enough.

Since the late 50's, powder manufacture changed and it is not possible for it to "go bad" anymore.

Maybe you didn't store her correctly.

And even though powder may be WW-2 surplus doesn't necessarily make it bad. I've been shooting H4831 WW-2 surplus since the 80s and it is still fine.
