If you don't reload, go with the 223. Ammo is very cheap and it will do exactly what you want. Just pick the correct bullet for the job. A fmj bullet will go right through and not make a big hole as long as you don't hit any bone. But a Varmint bullet should explode inside and not exit leaving the fur intake. Same thing about hitting a bone all bets are off. If you reload I would say the 22-250. You use the same bullets, you just have a little more reach. The bullets should do pretty much the same thing and you can load them up or down to your liking and your guns liking. Remember, saving the pelt is all about shot placement. Practice, practice, practice
