Vault doors and home-made gun vaults

IMO you are building your vault way too large. Unles it is meant to be a "secure room".

Tom,
You know you are right--I had a meeting this past weekend at Michael Murphy and Sons Sporting Clays in Augusta, KS.

He has a walk-in gun vault in his clubhouse that is about 10X20 and it was really big after I walked in and looked around.

I am planning it smaller after seeing one first hand--I just wish I could stock it with all of the pretty guns I saw in his vault this weekend! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks to all for your help! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Regards,
Tim

StormKing: Forgive my ignorance, but what is CMU? I am looking at doing something like this in the future myself.

Thanx.

CMU= Concrete Masonry Unit or concrete block. DON'T use cinder blocks. If you're not too worried about appearances you could actually dry stack them and grout the cells yourself eliminating the need for a mason.

Mr. Murphy's got some REALLY nice toys out there doesn't he? Does he still have that bear? Used to shoot sporting clays there when I live in Wichita.

Yes, he does--I especially like the Kreighoffs and Kolar O/U's--several were in the $25,000 range! As far as the bear, yes it is still there--it pains me to see that the beautiful white pelt of the polar bear is grimy with gun goo and oil--if I had a nice bear like that, I sure wouldn't use it for a bench towel... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Just a thought but if this room is built as you build the house, everyone that works on it will know about the room. And be able to make a good guess as to what it is for. Maybe better to make them think it is some type of specilisied work area.

Hiding the room should definately be considered. One I read about has peg board all along the outer wall. One section can be opened and there is a door behind it. Open door and you are in the room.
