Versitle Do-All wesern hunting rifle??????/

Long action=== 7STW
Short action== anything based on the 308 cartridge.
Heck, since you took Elk and Bear out of the equation, an AI'd 243 would even fill the bill IMO.

elk and bear are still in the 260 realm....

Didn't say it wasn't.
The OP said no Bear or Elk, not me.

Again,,, "I like anything based on the 308 case" and the 260 certainly falls into that catagory.

BTW,,, that rifle, rings, and scope package of yours in any short action'd caliber is about as close to the perfect western mountain rifle as it gets, IMO. Very Nice!

thats a stunner Huntsman,

thanks for all the ideas guys. Repete, you are right about his setup.

I would actually shoot black bears and elk with this rifle as well, i didnt clarify, i would shoot Moose and Big Bears (brown bears here in AK) with the 338.

I built my 270 WSM with the same thoughts in mind. It had been so long since a new 270 anything had come along, I went with it. I've no real complaints, but the 7mm WSM is still a better cartridge IMO.

Still can't go wrong with a 7 Remmy either.

The sig line is something I wish a few more would take a minute to think about.......

ive been looking at the 7wsm and it looks like it is a top contender for what i am looking for.

is the 7wsm hard to reload or real finicky, also what would everyone say for a mountain rifle type setup as far as specs for the build?

For a factory rifle I think that Kimber Montana in a 7WSM would be a great choice. Very nice rifle, in a nice lightweight package. Tom.

Most anything in the 7mm, is my choice. I am currently in a 7mm/08. Nesika action, Jewell trigger. A PacNor barrel 26" long, 1/10" twist...Yes, I like long barrels. A 1.5x6 Swarovski tops this package. The huge bullet choice with high BCs and SD are what appeals to me. I run a 175Nosler Part @2662fps, and the 140gr Nos Partition or Ballistic TIp at almost 2900fps. This should be good for anything from Moose to Mice.

7mm wsm... but the 260 is a tac driving round... i shoot against a couple 260's in our local monthly comp and man do they shoot... a buddy of mine shot a 247 @ 400 with a 260 last month.
