Versitle Do-All wesern hunting rifle??????/

How about a 7MM-08 AI. Custom Douglas barrel with a 5a contour, trued Remmy action, sweet reworked Remmy trigger, McMillian stock, maybe a Sightron Big Sky 4X16 scope. Wow, I just discribed my hunting rifle. OOP's
 
REM M700 SA SS with a sporter weight premium barrel, Timney trigger at 2.5 to 3 lb, McMillan or HS Precision stock, Limbsaver recoil pad. Top it with a 3.5-10X Leupold CDS scope. (Or better yet, have a CDS added to a 2.5-8X Leupold.) Mine is in 300 WSM but if elk weren't high on the menu, I'd go with the 7 WSM or even the .270 WSM. Either should work great for the bigger animals with a premium bullet in it.

It's shorter than a LA Mtn Rifle (which would also be sweet), light enough to carry in your hands all day and without as much muzzle jump as the Mtn Rifle. I may fall in love with something else in the future--or it maybe it will just be infatuation--but this rig works excellent for everything Western Big Game that I do.
 
I am leery of the WSM series only because of reports of feeding issues from other than single stack magazines.

And, I like the 7mmRem, .280 284 or 7mm-08. For sheer versatilty it is hard to beat the 7mmRem although it is a belted, long action only kind of round. A 280AI might be a better case and is almost identical, again so very versatile.

If you absolutely have to have a short action and you can resist the WSM a .284AI or 7mm-08AI might be the best choice.

One thing is for sure, nothing in a 7mmXanything is a "bad" choice; just some are better!

I like my Rem mtn rife in 7x57 Mauser. It shoots 140g and up bullets pretty good. I really like the old ctg. In a custom rifle it would be even better, you could specify the chamber length to bullet of choice. If it can kill hundreds of elephants it should do on western game.

anyone else have suggestions????? i am really liking the looks of the Kimber Montana in 260, 7/08,270 wsm, or 280AI. for everything under elk.

30-06 has killed every animal in North America, ammo is readily available everywhere, you can shoot 150 gr - 225 grain bullets depending on the twist rate. Every rifle company makes one.
 
I have a Savage in 7mm Rem Mag and my brother has a Model 70 in 7mm WSM. Their performance is about equal with the edge in lighter bullets MV going to the WSM. His rifle is about 1.5" shorter then mine in OAL, but I can walk into any shop in NA that sells ammo and pick up a box of shells. He may have to look alittle harder. They are IMO 6 of one/half dozen of the other.
 
For Caribou on down the 25-06 proved itself many times there in the interior. Either a Nosler 120gr Partition or Swift 120gr A-Frame for Caribou and any of the 87gr sp's for wolf size or less, they fly and kill well. R19 works well and when it gets cold and I mean -30 or less mag primers are the way to go.

What ever you do keep it simple....lots goes wrong after -30f and miles from the nearest hard ball.

I have some Sierra 25cal 70gr Blitz Kings I plan to work up and crony out of the 25-06 later this year....should be absolute screamers for yotes.

i really like my 280.im taking it elk hunting and then wolf hunting.it should do great i have been shooting it out to 1200yds with great results.no muzzle break either recoil is mild
