For my fellow Virginians, when using that statute, to CYA, have the landowners, that want the foxes shot on their property, write that on your permission slip. It could save you a ticket! Some DGIF enforcement personnel have some very different interpretations of the same laws. Forewarned is forearmed, CYA. Even in the event that some gung-ho warden does write you a ticket for shooting a fox, if you have the landowner's directive in writing, you've got a better than even chance that a judge will find in your favor.
Pruson,
Have you or your group tried to address our outdated rifle restrictions? Many counties have a .22 caliber restriction for anything other than groundhogs. Some counties even add a March 1 to August 31 restriction on using any rifle larger than .22 when hunting groundhogs. Under these county ordinances, it is actually illegal to shoot a coyote, or fox, etc. with a rifle that is otherwise legal for groundhogs. I have allies within DGIF in a couple of those counties. The tricky part is how to present the issue to the county Board of Supervisors for a change, so we don't shoot ourselves in the foot. Right now we have loopholes in the 17 and 20 caliber centerfires. I certainly don't want to see them closed. If you're of the same mindset on the legal rifles issue, I'd like to talk to some of you. There's more strength in numbers, and with a levelheaded approach, maybe we can get some of these counties into the 21st century.
