Virginia Hunters

Are there any members here from Virginia? I'm in Central Virginia and fairly new to Coyote hunting. I've been very successful with foxes and bobcats for a few years but this coyote thing is a whole new ball game!

Thanks,
Mark

Yep, there are a good many of us around. I'm in Chesterfield and hunt in Lunenburg and other areas around here. I've had no luck on yotes in my area, they just are not too plentiful here yet from what I can tell. I have never hunted much around Farmville, but have dabbled a little in the state forest in Prince Edward. You had any luck at all up there?

im from southeast va, there arent yotes here yet but we have plenty of fox, in fact i just caught one in one of my traps last night

Welcome nightrider82664
There are right many Va. hunters on here. I hunted down your way a month ago. We didn't do any good it was just to hot, but saw plenty bobcat tracks. We didn't see any sign of coyotes but I'm sure there are some around.
I live 20 miles north of Richmond and we are getting some coyotes around here that are beeing killed by deer hunters. So I guess they are getting thick enough to hunt now. I just need to locate an area where they are.
We have a few bobcats but they are not as thick as you have there. Wish they were sure would like to get one. Maybe next year when the season runs to the end of February I will have more time.
Do you hear the coyotes howling much?

Hello, I'm from way down in the southwestern part (Dickenson County), about 40 minutes west of Abingdon off I-81. I too have had success on fox and bobcats, but no coyotes yet. I've had one bark at me last year (probably knew something was up) and just recently some howled at a woodpecker call, but none to my credit yet. I keep trying though, it's better than sitting at home in the recliner.

How about the fox population where you guys live - do you have a lot? Here they seem to have almost vanished. I haven't seen a fox in quite a while. I've heard coyotes really work on the foxes. What do you think?

Welcome Nightrider. I live about 25 miles northeast of Richmond, out in Hanover County. Cooper Woods and I hunt together quite often, as well Vafoxhunter, who lives over in Ashland. Coyotes are pretty sparse around these parts, like Cooper said a few killed during deer season incidental to running dogs. You will find that they are concentrated in some areas and other areas simply have none.

Foxes are indeed plentiful, as foxhntr69 had said. You can only hunt what you got, and hope the others come on strong later. Welcome to the board and stay in touch, We sometimes do things togehter, such as this year we all got together and petitioned the VDGIF and got our calling seasons extended another month for next year. We sat in on the VDGIF Board of Directors meeting in Richmond and watched the finally vote take place, it is a done deal for next season. Foxes and Bobcats will be legal to hunt from 1 Nov 06 until the last day of Feb 2007, as well as next year it will be legal to call bobcat with an e-caller. WELCOME

Man thats awesome to hear about the extended season! I have always felt it ended to soon anyway. And good to hear about e-callers for cats. Just did not seem to make a lot of sense not to allow it. Thank you for pushing that issue! I once asked a game warden what he expected me to do if a cat came to my e-caller. He advised making sure I had a mouth call hanging around my neck during the call! lol
Here in Prince Edward County the bobcat hunting has pretty good this season. Called in 3 that were taken and saw a few more that we did not get a shot at. The fox hunting here has really gotten pitiful this year. In past years we have had a tremendous amount of luck (especially with greys) but they are vanishing her as well.

Prince Edward has a $50.00 bounty on coyote here and I spoke with the animal control officer here. He said he has checked 13 since Christmas day. Most were taken by deer hunters at the end of season though. We have seen some tracks in logging roads in some cutovers we hunt but no luck calling them yet. The warden also said he feels the increasing coyote population is a big reason for the declining fox population. It really was a disappointing fox season here. Got to get some of these coyotes but I got a lot to learn there yet!

nightrider--You've got a PM(private message). I know you're new here, so it is the flashing icon next to your log-in, in case you haven't used that option before.

Mark Coyotes are a relatively newcomers to my area. Im from over near Martinsville and I have had great luck with fox and cats over the years. However, these durn coyotes are giving me fits.

I have located many different groups in areas close to my home but so far these creatures are turning whats left of my hair grey.

Im enjoying this new challenge and I feel if I keep at it I will figure this new creature out.

Im heading out in the morning to an area where I called one in during september. This coyote came running to my foxpro jackrabbit call and winded me at 15 yards. I had a shotgun with #4 buckshot and he got away without me getting a shot at him. This was a very humbling experience.

I have a new strategy planed for this location in the morning. Im hopeing this new plan will end with a much better result. If not Im sure I will learn something.

There is a 50 dollar bounty in the county next to me. I live in whthe co. We are covered up in cototes they killed 34 of my friends sheep last year. I have only killed 3, I am new to the coyote hunting to.

You guys from Hanover, Wythe, and Farmville keep plugging away! I live about 15 minutes from 6mm06. We've got coyotes but the woods are awful thick here. I'm new at the sport but have seen plenty of coyotes over the years, and recently have seen what I think is the same dog twice close to my house. Alot of the land is leased in this county now but their are a few places to go still yet. I haven't killed one yet but believe that I will probably enjoy this kind of hunting better than deer or turkey. It's just gonna take alot of trial and error and patience, but it's good therapy to get out and beat around. Good luck in your hunting.

Glad that someone else is in Dickenson County. I am on a ridge above Nora. I hear some coyotes on rare occasions and have made several unsuccesful efforts to call one in. I did kill a large male that walked out into the edge of a field.

Note to 6mm06: We still have a very few foxes up here along with some bobcats. I find them very difficult to call.

Last fall I took a coyote with a bow in Wythe County during deer season.

I am at FT. Eustis,(Newport News) and call all around the Southeastern area of the State. I do right well on gray fox in this area. Almost every hunt club around here killed a few Coyotes during deer season running in front of their dogs, but there doesn't seem to be any large concentration of them in any one place. Also a few of the military installations in this area have reported having deer hunters take a few during their controled deer hunts.

I am also glad to here next years season has been extended and the use of E-calls for Bobcats has been legalized. I actually called in a cat this year with my Preymaster call but it busted me.

Welcome aboard Va Predator hunter. You're welcome for that extended season and the e-caller option. A few of us got together and petitioned the Board of Directors of VDGIF and after various hearings and meetings we got everything we had asked for.

jim1750,
I heard the same thing. I got the $75 for mine in Augusta Co. which is dropping to $50 on May 1st. First the mexicans march then the bounty drops /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif. They have emptied the $5000 pot for that county twice since November. Over 100 killed this year when I checked in at end of March. They had no idea there was going to be that many. By the way I'm from Harrisonburg area in Rockingham County.

We have been very successful on fox /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif, no bobcats or coyotes yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. I am in Franklin County and we have seen some coyotes in the past couple of years just wrong place wrong time /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif.

I am new here and stumbled on this post. I live in Carroll county in the Fancy Gap area. We are seeing coyotes pretty regularly. I have seen them dead from being run over on I-77, and I also have seen one ran over in Grayson county near Elk Creek. The last day of early muzzle loading season last year I had one come within 20 to 25 yards of my treestand . I went to shoot him, but when I looked through my scope all I saw was black. My sling was in the way of my scope due to the way I had the gun laying. When I moved the sling the coyote took off and I was unable to get a shot off. The number of fox around also seems high. I do have to say we are not seeing as many groudhogs, and there does not seem to be as many turkey's either.

That end of the state seems to have more coyotes we have some around Roanoke area but I don't think we have large numbers of them. A couple of places I hunt had a lot of turkeys now there gone may be predators, may be food I don't know my guess is the predator population is no the rise. Coyotes are hard to call in my area because of the terrain and the lack of large parcels of land to hunt. Some places I have permission to hunt 25 acres next to 500 acres I don't have permission so unless I happen to be in ear shot I'm just wasting time. But on the other hand the fox are as thick as fleas on a stray dogs back, can't keep them away long enough to call a coyote. If you shoot them your chances of shooting a coyote gos down and if you don't shoot them they bust you then everything leaves. Good luck I haven't really tried yet this year waiting for some cool weather tired of the bugs everytime I go out come home covered with chiggers even with off, cutter, gasoline, Diesel.
