Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44 looking for opinions....or facts would be even better

I am looking for a nice low-medium variable scope that doesn't get too much above 400 USD because i have about a 500 dollar limit on scope and mount for my AR. I saw this scope had a nice range, and the reviews i read about it are almost all 4-5 stars or the equivalent. I am wondering if anyone could tell me their experience. I am also looking at the Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 i believe it was and Nikon Monarch 2-8x32. The Nikon is the lowest priced, but the Vortex has the largest objective lens, which allows more light if i am not mistaken. If anyone has some other suggestions i am open, but these are the ones ive narrowed down to so far. Thank you for any help.

Don't worry about the bigger obj lenses. A better light transmission makes for a better scope, that does not necessarily directly translate to bigger objective.

I think Vortex a good scopes, but you can get better glass for comparable money.

For your application, the Leupold Mk-AR 3-9 sounds about perfect. That, or a VX-2 2-7 or 3-9...and your option if a VX-3 2.5-8. I feel you will be happier In the long run with these versus the others mentioned. And, for the record, I have owned most all mentioned here, or similar, and am pretty much set on Leupold VX-2/MK-AR as the very best glass for my dollar. I would need to spend a good bit more to eclipse what I feel the VX-2 offers.

Plus, the Mark AR Mod 1 has the calibrated dial for 223 and a 55gr bullet. So if your AR is indeed a 223 it would be a match made in heaven.

I have a couple of those Mark AR scopes and they are nice. The VX3 option is a great one too but it doesn't have the dial the that the Mod 1 has. The Mark AR scopes are pretty much VX2 scopes with different options and packaging.

I have a viper PST, VXII, and a regular Viper. I would rank them like this. Viper PST, VXII and Viper. I like them all but a luepold VXII is a class higher than a vortex viper.

ugh, i wish there werent so many choices lol....ive looked into them and the Mark AR is nice, but it is a low magnification of 3.3x and sadly i dont have many scopes so i dont know what the difference between a 3.3x and the 2.5x of the VX-3 would be....or the 2x of the VX-2....and i can only afford one for now

I looked at the M223 also and while the Leupold always seems the favorite the M223 has that nice software from Nikon to dial the BDC reticule into various weights and types of bullets....was trying to compare scopes and the guy at basspro wouldnt let me side by side compare....policy is only one scope at a time:|

Big dog.

All that means is the magnification factor on the low end for the scope. One magnifies the FOV 2.5 times and the other 3 times. The low end power of 2.5 and 3x will be hard to tell the difference between because they are so close.

I'd tell the guy at bass pro to work faster in handing me the scopes when I asked for them. Actually, I'd [beeep] to management, might not do any good but I would anyways.

I had a 2.5-10 viper PST and was VERY disappointed in the glass. Especially when compared to buddies larger PSTs. So much that I called Vortex and was told "the image from the 2.5 will never equal image on the 4x or 6x".

I now have a 4-16 PST and happy with it but glass is still not quite vx3 good (on highest setting).

I like some of the features of the viper but if your wanting good/best glass, run from the 2.5 vortex!!!!

I have a Viper HS-T 4-16, a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 4-12, and two of the Weaver Grand Slam Tacticals. As for glass quality, I prefer the Weavers over the other two. I like the turrets on the Vortex, but I think the Leupold has better glass than the Vortex. I will most likely be selling the Vortex in favor of a Weaver Tactical 3-15, if I ever get around to it.

I have a few Leupold 3-9x40's, but not the AR Mod 1. I went ahead & ordered the Vortex / BDC reticle. I can always replace it if it turns out I don't like it. This is going on my new 6.5 Grendel

i ended up with the VX-2 2-7x33 with the CDS based on my readings it had what i wanted, not QUITE the upper magnification i wanted, but my shots won't be that long around here.....[beeep] I'm stuck with a shotty most places around me i can always sell that and get something else if it doesn't work out. I am just starting into this whole adventure of predator hunting(hunting anything except paper really)....so i reckon trial and error is a part of the deal. I appreciate everyone's input.

I recently was told the opposite, that this Vortex was better that the AR Mod1.

FWIW, Cameraland has them:

http://www.cameralandny.com/optics/vortex.pl?page=vortexviperhs2-10x44

and they have some good videos on the page as well.

I'll be placing my order shortly with them, as I like buying from our sponsors when possible.

A Viper PST, maybe. Not the standard Viper lines...JME.

The Viper, Viper HS, HS-LR and PST ALL have the same glass and coatings. PSTs have etched glass and lighted reticles. IMO all are substantially better than a Leupold AR and VX2

FWIW, I'll have the Vortex on my new 6.5 Grendel. I'm building a 223 for my wife & will put a Mark AR Mod1 3-9x40 on it, so I'll be able to compare them side by side under a variety of conditions.

Well, I've had a quick look at my Vortex. First blush it looks great, but it was a very brief look.

My mother in law passed on thursday. We got the call that we needed to get up there as she likely wouldn't live through the night. Scope was delivered while we were getting ready to hit the road. So I got to take it out, look at it, look though it out the door & box it back up LOL.

Now I just need the rifle to mount it on.
