VX-I or Elite 3200 ???

me

New member
I have never spent more than $129 for a scope; just didn't have the buxs after buying the rifle. But now I want to move up one step - I'm not quite ready for the jump to $300+ /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif ..... I prefer to hunt in the woods but I often hunt open areas.....

I want a 2-7 to put on my Model Seven in .223.
I want it to be parallax-free at 100 yards.

The Leupold VX-1 is factory set at 150 yards but they can reset it.
The Bushnell Elite 3200 is already set at 100 yards.
Both are just under $200.

Which would you buy and why /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif ????????

Thanks for your input!

Elite 3200, and I am a Leupold fan. The 3200 is near the top end of their line and the VX-1 is going the other direction as far as line quality is concerned. Now if you are looking at a VX-III 2.5x8x36, then that would get my vote.

I'm a Leupold fan but would definately go with the 3200. To me they are the best bang for the buck when not wanting to get into the multiple hundred dollar bill mark. Their anti fog lenses work as advertised as well.

I had a VX-1 and it was not even as good as my Swift, which I rate one step below the 3200.

Either the 3200 or Nikon Prostaff are superior to VX-1. The only great feature the VX-1 has is the brand name and the customer service reputation when you need it.

If you want a real quality scope for less, go with the Burris Fullfield 2 with the Ballistic plex.I've got the 3200 and my brothers got a vx1 and I think the fullfield beats them both.Price is pretty close to the same.FWIW Good Hunting Chad

Geez..... I didn't expect such a landslide vote for the Bushnell!
Thank you all for such quick responses! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif

Speaking of Optic Zone.....

How fast do they ship?
Do they backorder often or carry a good stock?

Their prices sure are right!

Thanks again!

Bang for buck? Bushnell? I was told the bushnell legend series is same as elite 3200 except it doesn't have the 'rain gaurd' coating. Can someone confirm that? Because i bought a legend in 2-7x32 and its an awesome little scope and didn't cost much at all! It sits on girlfriends youth nef single shot .243 and everytime i look through it i want to jerk it off and put it on one of my guns! I would buy another legend in a heartbeat. They are about 75 bucks canadian less than elite 3200's and we don't get much rain/fog on the prairies so i could care less about the 'rain guard'. You'll notice when you peruse the website too...the legend has a 91% light transmission and they mention the elite 4200 light transmission but they don't tell you what the 3200 is?

If you want bang for buck go look at the legend too...especially if we confirm it is a 3200 minus the rain gaurd!

Oh, and don't forget the simmons aetec...i shoot one on my .243 and its great for the bucks. Still think a 3-9x40 legend would be better and prolly 50 canadian bucks less!

Blakeinator -

I, too, have a 2-7 Legend on my Model Seven in 7mm08; that's what is prompting me to put one on my .223.

I was told that they were practically the same by a Rep when I called Bushnell the other day to find out about parallax settings. If I remember correctly, besides the coating, the biggest difference is the parallaxe settings - 50 yards for the Legend and 100 yards for the Elite 3200. I've got to call back and confirm this before I make my final decision.

If this is true, I will evenutally move the Legend on the 7mm-08 to my Savage .22 WMR and buy a second Elite for the 7mm-08.

One big difference is the 3200(and 4200) has a 1-piece tube and is made in Japan, the Legend(and Trophy) is made in the Philippines...an email I sent to Jon at The Optic Zone...

Subject: Bushnell Trophy and Legend?

Jon,

Can you tell me where the legend and trophy are built and the
differences between them and the Elite 3200?

Thanks,

Tim
----------
Tim,

Both scopes are made in the Phillipines. The difference is fairly
noticeable. The Elite 3200 is the better of the scopes, being brighter
and clearer, along with having the rainguard feature. The Legend is a
nice scope optically, but the housing and power rings look and feel
cheap. The Trophy is also a fairly nice scope in the price range, but
not the quality optically as the Legend and the Elite 3200. Each one is
a step up from each other in quality. The Elite 3200 being the highest
quality, than the Legend followed by the Trophy. If you have any other
questions, just let us know.

Thanks,

Jon & Tammi Jackoviak

Me--sounds like you are getting some good advice so far. Personally, I would buy a 3200, Nikon Buckmaster, Burris FFII, or Weaver classic V 2-10x38 all before I would buy a VX-1. I own at least 2 of all of these scopes, except the Buckmaster(got hung up on Monarchs). All of these scopes are multi-coated, the vx-1 uses the same magnesium flouride coatings they put on 'em back in the 50's. My Model 7 in 204 has a 3200 3-9x40 on it in Talley mounts. Being a 223, if I were you, I would opt for something in the 3-9x40 range over a 2-7x with a smaller objective. However, I wouldn't go over a 40mm objective. Take care---2MG

2Much -

Right now, I have a 3-9x40 Bushnell Banner on the Model Seven in .223.

I don't think that I have ever set a scope at a higher power than 6x except for sighting-in purposes.

Besides brighter, clearer optics.....

The reason I want a drop in power is because I do so much of my calling "in the woods" for medium-sized game such as coyotes. Shots are often under 50 yards. The wider field of view would be a tremendous asset. 44 feet @ 2x @ 100 yards for the 2-7 Elite vs 36 feet @ 3x @ 100 yards for the 3-9 Banner - almost a 25% incease.

I want the 100 yard parallax-free setting because I sometimes hunt in the open where my shots are often in the 100 to 150 yard range for small to meduim-sized game such as groundhogs and coyote. Parallax would be more noticable when trying for clean kills on smaller targets.

This balancing act is a pain.....
Guess I should just get 2 rifles with 2 different scopes! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

BTW..... I am very envious of your .204 Model Seven! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

the vx 1 is a nice scope, it now has MC4 coatings on all exterior lenses just like the VX2 used to have, I had a VX2 and it was very very clear and crisp, slightly better than my elite 3200, but the elite can be had for a little less, it also has a very quick and convient power change ring, clarity slight edge to vx 1 user freindly ness nod goes to the 3200, I would buy the 3200, I have a burris bplex scope, its nice but I hate the stiff powerchange ring that requires you to move the whole entire eyepeice. if the elite had the bplex reticle, I would replace all scopes with elites

I've got a vari-x 2 Leupold,a 3x9 Elite 3200,and a 4x12 Elite 3200,all of which collect dust now that I've switched my rifles over to Burris Fullfield 2 scopes with B-plexes.Best glass for the money.Good Hunting Chad
