VX-I or Elite 3200 ???

A follow-up on this dilemma.....

I'm going with the Leupold VX-1 in 2-7x33.

Before going out to buy the new scope, I called Bushnell one more time today to be sure that I had been given the correct information on the parallax settings of their Elite 3200. The Rep I spoke to was kind enough to take the time to look up the individual scope's technical specifications rather than just quoting generalities......

It turns out that the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32 is parallax-free at 50 yards.
I can't live with parallax that would throw shots off on small targets like groundhogs at longer ranges.

Leupold and confirmed that their 2-7x33 VX-1 RIFLE scope is parallax-free at 150 yards.
If I should decide that I want it set for a closer range, they will do it for $30; turn around is about 1 week. (The shotgun version is set for 75 yards.)

Thanks to Everyone for all your input! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

(The Leupold Rifle versions are their part #'s 53743, 56550, 56610 and 56620 depending on finish and reticle.)

I think your making a mistake with the low end Leupold. I have a 2-7X Elite 3200 and have NO problem with parallax when sighting in on targets at 100 yards with my .243

If your in no big hurry start checking Ebay EVERYDAY for a Elite 3200. I paid $140 for mine and I am very pleased with it. I went to Gander Mountain to compare the Bushnell, Nikon and Burris Fullfield II. The Burris came in third by FAR when it came to optic clearness. The Nikon Pro Staff and Bushnell Elite seamed about the same and I would of bought either, but I got the best deal with the Bushnell on Ebay. It took a couple of months last spring to get it at that price, but I wasn't in any hurry.

This new scope will be going on a Model Seven in .223; I already have a 2-7x32 Bushnell Legend on my Model Seven in 7mm-08. This was the first time I have ever had a variable that was anything but 3-9. It has been my experiences with the 2-7 Legend that have convinced me to put a 2-7 in place of the 3-9 Banner that is already on the .223.....

I love the wider field of view! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
I love the improved clarity! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

When sighting in the 7mm-08, groups tended to be about 1/2" at 100 yards - but there was almost always a flier..... Sometimes the entire group would spread out to 1 1/2 to 2"..... I couldn't figure out why until I discovered that the Legend in 2-7 was set to be parallax-free at 50 yards. I shot the other day at 50 yards and got all three into one hole.

A 50 yard parallax-free setting will not suit my purposes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
That's the only way I can get any 2-7 offering from Bushnell. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Maybe next year I'll be able to afford to move up to the VX-III! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
That'll make my old friend Greg Meyer a very happy camper! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
He's been pushing me towards Leupold for a long time! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You won't regret the choice...

Although not a VX-III... You are getting a quality scope and for the uses that we discussed... you will be happy.

And, I'll let you check out my VX-III 1.5X5 in a few weeks when I get down there...

Just so you don't mind it if your son falls in love with my Model Seven! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I'd go with the Leupold hands down. Personally, I don't buy the high-end low-end thing. I'd rather have the low end of a line of scopes known for phenomenal quality that is made in Oregon than the high end of a line of scopes of questionable quality (in my experience) that is made overseas. Leupold's customer service is tops. The clarity on my VX-1 is superb, better than my Burris (but I don't think my Burris is U.S. made). The clarity of the Elite may be better, but to my eyes any difference was negligible. From a durability/reliability perspective (which for my money is the most important factor in scope selection) I don't think a Leupold can be beat in the VX-1 price range. My 2 cents.

I also think you won't be disappointed with the VX-1. I have an VX-1 equipped BAR LongTrac and could not be happier with it's sharpness, contrast and clarity. Compared with the Nikon ProStaff on my Vanguard..it's no contest...my eyes see things much better with the Leupold. One thing regarding your concern about parallax...you must have considered AO? Just curious..Also "me" it appears you shoot at the Busch shooting range? I'm in O'Fallon Mo and go there often.

Welcome to the board twag! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Glad to see the cat finally let go of your tongue so you could make a post. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

Thank You Jack, now that deer hunting is all but over, I need to get after them varmints/predators. Great site and forum!

I bought the new scope!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Isn't it strange.....

.....how you can head out to go to the store to pick up one thing and then come back with something entirely different..... All the way there, I thought about crows and ground hogs at 100+ yards..... And how I used to hunt the woods and hills all the time but now I'm tending stay more in the open because it's less taxing on my old legs and heart..... And how often I've even been placing the call out at distances of 100 or 125 yards..... I ended up buying a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Go figure! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I will say one thing..... For someone who's used to a $79 Bushnell Banner... WOW!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif What a difference! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks again for all your input, Gentlemen!

Let us know how that Elite works out for you. As I said, I LOVE my 2-7X Elite 3200. For the money it is well spent. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Well, Billy Bob.....

I didn't get to take it out into the woods or fields today..... But I did get to the range for a couple of hours to sight it in and play..... I love the clarity! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif The click adjustments were right on the money! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif What more can I ask for!??! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Maybe some time next week I'll get to try it in action!

I wonder if..... If I were to buy another 3200 in 2-7 for my 7mm-08 Model Seven (to replace the Legend and move it to my .22 Mag) ..... If there might be any way that Bushnell could adjust the parallax to 100 yards..... Guess I'll just have to call and ask/beg! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks again, Everyone! It's reassuring to know that those who have much more "scope" experience than I do have confirmed that what I got was a hard-earned dollar well spent! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

You'll really like that scope. I've got 3 of them plus a 4x12x40 in the 3200 series and they are my favorite scopes. That 50 yard parallax deal just doesn't sound right to me. Why would any manufacturer set it so short on a big game scope? I thought most .22 scopes were set at 75 yards. Not doubting what you heard the guy say, just thinking he had the wrong scope specs. I shoot out to 300 yards all the time at my range and haven't noticed any problems with parallax.

Rimfire scopes are usually set for 50 yards.

I called Bushnell several times..... Some Reps told me 100 yards on the 2-7's because they are in the general category of "rifle scope"..... But when I got a Rep who took the time to look at the specs for the exact scope I was considering, he came up with 50.

I agree completely. I think they do it because the 2-7's are often used in heavy cover and on shotguns. But, on larger game at closer ranges, an inch or less of error in shot placement isn't generally going to make that much of a difference.

Well I give up trying to find a email address on their site. Anyone else have any luck with Bushnell's email address. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

I've always just called them at 913-752-3400.

Remember, some reps DO NOT take the time to check the specs and just quote generalities /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif ..... A problem in general with CS Reps for all companies.

(One of the best CS Reps I have ever delt with is Shawn up at Hunters Specialties! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif )
