Realizing that reception and receiving quality is based on the type of area you are in..What do you use in the 22 channel none licensed varity..The sound quality and range are not always what is advertised..Battery life is another issue. Tks for your help

The Cobra two ways you can buy at Walmart for about $60 a pair are pretty good. I've talked 15-20 miles with them before.

They have the lithum ion batteries which are excellent rechargables.

I've used the Motorola line for a long time. They work pretty well. However, we have had some reception trouble with the last units we got (model T8530R). They also are touchy with picking up voice transmissions so you frequently get 1/2 messages (frustrating).

Has anyone tried those Midland models? I read an Outdoor Life review this past year for the 26 mile (+ or -) ones that was good. I'm ready to try something besides the Motorolas myself.

One of the things to watch for is the ability to suppress the "bleep" at the end of a transmission. All of the Motos do that, will the Midlands do so too?

Not trying to hijack your thread, but the Motos are really popular and this last set just didn't cut it. As soon as I get a suitable replacement the kids can play with the Motos.

We had a set of cobra 22mile and ended up giving them to the kids.We also used a couple of motorolas, these were only 5mile,we used these for years. The ear jacks started to go bad on the radios ,started to have a lot static.and programing them was a pain from day one.We went with the new 30mile camo Midlands this year,so far these are far better than what we had before. We have only tested range to 5-6miles and reception is clear, and they are simple to set up and they are water proof. The only thing that I dont like is the battry charger doesnt shut off automaticaly when fully charged

Didn't know that the Midlands were waterproof...one less thing to worry about. I'll give them a look.

I use mine on my non-shooting shoulder, mounted on a strap vest. Have you ever used the ear bud or is that just too much hassle?

I use a maxpedition versipack,it has a radio pocket that fits the midland fairly good, strap hanging of my left shoulder. My hunting partner, his turkey vest has a pocket same place and side.At nite the ear bud wires always seem to get snaged on something, can be a hassle.Always messing with the ear bud, keeps working its way out of my ear,not a great fit.We just use the radios without them.Got mine from cabelas
