Walleyes on Ice

Hey,
Im going ice fishing for walleyes for the first time this year on our lake, was wondering if anyone else did this and how you rigged your tip ups???

I know this is a hunting site but walleyes are predators and you do have to find them and in time kill them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks

The walleyes have moved to deeper water. Try them on the bottom of the deep humps in about 30ft of water. Look for sharp terrain changes.

Tip ups don't work real well for walleyes unless they are aggressive. If that's all you have to work with, rig them up so you have 4lb premium line as a leader. Use a blood red small hook and hook a golden shiner under the dorsal fin. Set the tip up as light as you can.

Your best bet is to use an ice rod and reel set up and tie on a sweedish pimple and tip it with a minnow head. Jig and wiggle this rig a foot off the bottom. Set the hook when there's any change in the action.

Here's what they look like. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks,
I would use the jig rod but the ones i have now aur UL's for panfish
I read on a fishing site that some guys use 2 fatheads about three feet apart.

And oh ya, trust me, i know what a walleye looks like, (been to canada 4 times)...ive just never caught one, or even fished for them, through the ice.

Thanks
Cody

Nice catch! nothing beats jigging for Walleyes in a ice shack with a full cup of Whiskey by your side! err I mean coffee, yeah thats it

i use to ice fish all the time but anymore I would rather coyote hunt when the cold and snow are here.I love fishing walleyes out of my boat though.I think I'm down to my last fillets c'mon break up

We actually do more walleye fishing in the winter than we do in the summer. It seems then we are always after bass during the warm months. But, I do like walleye fishing from time to time in the summer too.

We also fish for trout in the summer...

And of course we aren't opposed to panfish either...

This is one my wife picked up while we were walleye fishing 18.5",4.5# She caught another one awhile (weeks)later that was 19"and 5.7# but not to be outdone I caught one that was 19.5",6.5# /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Wow, those are some great smallies. I don't get to get into them all that much as we have very few where I live but I sure do enjoy fishing them. Congrats on getting such nice ones!

The funny thing about that big smallie I caught is the very next night I caught one identical to it.This lake has an abundance of rusty crayfish and the smallies gorge on them and get quite large, the walleys get big too.Its hard to keep em off you live bait though.(crayfish) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Those are great bass for WI... Or Minnesota.

I have the largest smallie I ever caught on my wall. He was 18 1/2 inches. That one came from the Canadian side of Rainy Lake.

I shoot alot of carp too. was that a big head you shot? I cut the wings off the rays and stick them in crab pots. One guy I know eats them. they are like mosquitos in the cheasapeake.

No, that fish was a freshwater drum, aka sheepshead, aka grunter, etc.

I hear they are good to eat but I haven't worked up the courage yet.

Not real well. I had some relatives in south western WI years ago but don't get over there now much since they passed away.
