Wanna be a cowboy?

Here goes.

I grew up as a farm-boy, similar to a cowboy, but I never rode any livestock. The company I work at holds an annual rodeo at "Rawhide" in Scottsdale, AZ (Cliff Garrett Memorial Rodeo). I had ignored the temptation the last 7 years that I worked there. Inevitably the urge won out... I signed up for a bull ride and a bareback-bronc ride. (This is what I was doing the last two days.)

Both the bull and bronc augered me into the ground pretty hard and I failed to make a qualified ride. It was a rush though. IMO it is impossible not to underestimate the power these wild animals have until you've "ridden" one. Heck, I was raised in a barn and had no idea what I was in for. The stock was fresh off the indian reservation, some even with burrs and cholla still hangin off 'em.

I started off pretty good on the bull and rode him for 3-4 seconds before he threw me to the ground, jumping on my legs and head. (Real men wear helmets).

For reference, having a bull jump on your head while wearing a helmet feels similar to a real hard helmet-to-helmet hit playing varsity football... You're buzzin pretty good afterwords. My legs are beat-up bad, but still working fine.

Here's the bronc pics. My bronc must've been Budweiser breeding stock, 'cause she (yes, a mare) was the freaking biggest horse I've ever ridden. Her hooves were the size of my head. She was the biggest horse the stock contractor had.

She blew out of the chute harder than any acceleration I've ever felt. My right arm is a few inches longer than my left now. I almost got hung-up coming off her. Needless to say, our time wasn't long together. In fact, many cowboys told me that I displayed the worst form they had ever seen. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

She was a striking mare. If I was a rich man I would've bought her on the spot. She's probably about 400lbs heavier than my wife's horse, and 8 inches taller.

The last pic is a real good one of my butt just prior to impact, enjoy. ;D

You da man! It's always better to ride in the rodeo than to stand on the sidelines watching. Besides, scars and broken bones add character.

I'd rather have 10 seconds in the saddle than a lifetime of watching from the stands. I rode bulls in high school and a couple years after, the power of them animals is absoultly awesome. Watch out it can get addicting.

This was evidently the loud thud I heard just before I went crunch underneath the bull.

This pic made the whole thing worth while.

I'm still high on adrenaline from the event. For anyone considering this... it's a must do.

OH-YEAH! I'm already addicted.

the bull ride looks great, even when it was over you were still there. least you wernt rolling off the ass end. i have allways wanted to bronc ride. bet you had a lot of fun!
Are you going for it again next year?

Yeah, I got some last minute free pointers from Frank Kelly. He only lives 5 minutes from my parents ranch. I'll be a ringer by the time the next rodeo comes 'round.

Great pics Daisy! Is that green stuff on the bull's hind quarters yours or his?! LOL! Whoever ran the camera must enjoy watching you in pain... notice there are no pictures of you sitting on the bull... walking off the pain or anything else! Haha, good stuff.

Daisy,
First, Congrats on getting on a bull. Its something I think everybody should do. I.M.O. its the most fun your going to have with your pants on.
If you plan on doing it again look up a good coach. Learning to do it right makes it alot easier although it is always easier said than done.
Take Care,
yote yodeler: Good song, Chris is the man.

I rodeod from about 79-90ish. I believe those picture were about the mid 80's. I have tons of better pictures put up somewhere?
