Yesterday I ordered the new Barnes reloading manual but they are not ready to be shipped out yet. I live in California and it looks like I will be forced into using the Barnes 85 gr TSX bullet starting in July. I have never loaded any 243 WSSM loads before and I have been looking for any information I can get for reloading the 243 WSSM. The 243 WSSM loads will be shot in a AR-15 with a D-Tech 22" barrel upper. The only reloading manual I have with the WSSM calibers in it, is the Hornady Volume 1. So if any of you have reloaded the 85 Gr Barnes TSX bullet in 243 WSSM or Win 243, I would appreciate any information you can give me. THANKS

I have a suggestion MOVE TO ANOTHER STATE and get away from all the bull that goes on over there .And besides we have more game than Kalli to hunt .God bless Texas . Just bring some of those big cats ya'll have . We have some but not enough . I chased one for a year off and on but only could call it 3 time and saw it for just seconds no shot given .I still cryen over that .Good luck on the reloading and if you find out something on the 243wssm give me a shout .

I have used them, but haven't been very successful at grouping them.

Everything I've read since then, seems emphatic to NOT load them close to the lands, like we tend to do for other bullets.

They (Barnes) say best accuracy between .030 and .070" from the lands and .050" is usually the best. From other loaders, they've said the TSX bullets like to be pushed hard to be accurate. The WSSM ought to do that easily, but might take a bit more pushing in the 243.

I've gotten load data right from Barnes before for the 243. I thought I had it on this laptop but cannot find it. Get ahold of Ty Herring or Dave Card at Barnes, and they can email the propper data to you.

Well the first statement is no help to him. It's an easy one to make, but seldom easy for a family man to do. Some have, but I suppose those are not the ones willing to stand and fight for what's rightfully ours.

And for the second statement, I'd say that depends. We have an estimated deer herd of 400,000 to 700,000 deer, are getting black bears out the wazoo, and wild pigs have become the number one sought after big game animal in the state.

Factor into that, there is quail chukar, pheasant, rabbits, tons of varmint hunting, including coyote, bobcat, fox.

On top of all that, we have so few bugs biting us in the summer you forget what a misquito bite feels like. having grown up in Ohio, I do not miss the bugs or humidity, both of which you have PLENTY of there in Texas, I know I lived in Orange Tx a bit.

Oh, yes, all of the above are widely available on public land. The one exception is the pigs. They're on public land, but not a lot.

Yea we have our freaks here, more than we need, want or deserve, but there's a lot of good stuff here too.

Cali is a joke..........

Tell everyone that will ya! Please. That must be why so many people move here each year. (Most of them legal /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) We have more people in this county than in 5 NW states combined. Heck, we probably have more square miles in this county, than Mich has people.

Born and raised in Ohio, and been in CA since '72. Comparing state to state, there is NO comparison.

I'd LOVE to tell them how nice Mich is but when they get there in jan and it's 10 below and snowing, they realize they just left a state with an Avg winter temp of 45 degrees.

seriously, you'd have to live here for a bit and realize all it has to offer, you'd be amazed. The only things you hear about are the freaks in the news. If I were to summarize TX from what's in the news, you'd all be black lynchin, homo killin, oil barron rednecks that own at least a 300 thousand acre ranch.

If you believe ALL you see and hear in the news, then all I can say is that's sad.

Most of the real freaks in Cali live on the coast, that is also where all or most of the good jobs are. But with rents ruling 700 bucks a month and up you have to have good job to have a roof over your head. But the coast is nice well except for all the traffic. When I lived in Anahiem in the late sixties I had to work in redondo beach so i could have one of them "high paying good jobs" it was nice getting up at six AM so I could get to work by nine after the two hour drive past LAX then I got off at four and the two or sometimes three hour drive home past LAX again, getting home in time for a late supper by seven then to bed by ten or elevin so I could get up at six next day. But I was makeing more a week then than I did a month after I moved backi to AZ there I only had a fifteen minute drive to and from work, tyhat was hard to get used to sleeping in because i did not have to be to work till nine there either. Of course the hunting was some what more sparse I guess but I only had to drive thirty minutes to get out of town to where I could hunt or just shoot cans or what ever. You have to take every thing in context. I am retired now I can walk far enough out of town to call yotes heck I can call them right up to my back porch at night if I want. We have deer comeing in to the bird feeder all the time this time of year. And the Venison is all Grain fed here in Kansas our Whitetails run 150-200 pounds dressed, and them folks from Tx and OK have lately been sending use feral hogs too. Like I said every thing in context. Yes we do have a lot more variation in weather winter to summer from maybe 100 in July to -10 in Feb but it is a nice contrast. I am just gald i do not have to work and I get enough from my pension to do some of the things I alwas planned on doing after retirement. I could not afford to if I was still in Cali. Not to mention the legal pitfalls. BTW you can use starting loads from any 85 grn bullets work your loads up slowly and experament with COAL That is waht I did with the
Barnes 85 Grn TSX I worked up for my 243 WSSM AR 38 gr. Varget WW primer WW case trimed to 1.660 Loaded OA length 2.220 Hope that helps BTW I would not move back to Cali on a bet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are you bitchin' or braggin'?

More concerned about the freaks in office. California may as well be it's own separate nation, cuz none of them are interested in any of the principles our founding fathers set forth. I hardly think California state law is a figment of my imagination....

Thanks 2 muchgun thats what i was refuring 2 . And if people cant take a joke then stay there in Kali and let your great Arnald keep letting the aleans claming more and more of the country . Do a search on you tube about all of the little camps that are poppen up were they have there on rules and then tell me that TEXAS is terrible . Now saying this do a search on how much were doing here to keep them out compared to what Arnald is doing . I 'll take all of the misquito bites in the world than live in a homo infected state were you cant even do what our forfathers fought for freedom to do . Oh not all of us black lyken oildiggers . But hell i take a rednick compliment anyday .

So here's a big Hell ya FOR YA . Ithink i go get me a bud and set back and load me some lead bullets , opps that something yall cant do because of all of the tree huggers over there . Anyway enough time wasted here , like i said man a little joke goes a long way when you rights get taken away . So praise kali all you want but i will take texas and alot other states wayyyy before Kali . God bless and if i pissed someone off then please forgive me . Oh well

Didn't piss me off. Never said I liked the politics here, and more than happy to offload any and all freaks we can.

There are some darn good laws that started here and have filtered into other states, and I'm glad to see it.

BTW
I CAN still use lead anywhere I want to shoot. Can't hunt with it FOR CERTAIN GAME, IN CERTAIN AREAS, but that is not statewide.

Have any National forrest areas in your states? Guess what's coming to a forrest near you?

Am I braggin or complaining? Maybe a little of both, but a lot of folks knock CA without ever living here. I drive 10 min to work, have for the last 30 years, sometimes it was 5, before I moved farther out. I bought a house (4th one now)8 years ago, and in todays crummy market, it's STILL worth nearly 200K more than I paid for it.

Do I like the freaks we have, NOPE not one bit, and we do have plenty of them. By the way, TX also has it's version of San Fran as well, so careful there.

Been to TX and done that. Not my cup of tea.

Got a good laugh when I read that. TFF...... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Nothing wrong with a man defending his home state. California is cool in a lot of ways. Have been there, and have family there.

You have to admit though, they have the largest collection of idiots in the nation, many in office, putting forth litigation that is unique only to Cali and complete BS to most of the citizens of this country. They have all kinds of "special" laws that do not exist anywhere else. The "do gooders" of California need to be beaten like Sunday morning boners and left to expire, IMO.

I will not go so far here as to start posting links on Cali's "special" laws. I just don't care that much, and I'm quite sure you know what I mean.

It's a beautiful state, and much to like, but the people runnin' the joint have views far different than my own......

Lets see... the Gov here is from Austria... And the President of the USA is from Texas... Yeah.. I see similarities... we ALL live in a screwed up Country... I dont shoot .243 and dont live in the Lead ban area.. I hope the Original poster was able to glean some useful info from this political waste of time.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I load at the rifle range. I worked up two loads with the 85g Barnes tripple shock that shot 3/4" and still have half a box of bullets left when shooting a blued Rem 700 with a 22" barrel in 243 Win.

Loads are as follows:

Rem Brass
Win large rifle primer
.050 jump off the lands

45.5g of R#19

39.5-40.2g of IMR 4064 were all extremely accurate in my rifle.

I have no idea of where these loads are in relation to what some [beeep] eyed loading manual states is a max load, but these loads were very safe in my rifle.

The load of 45.5g of R#19 seemed to be very fast when shooting it at 300 yards, but that is a WAG on my part.

It's a good idea to check a loading manual to make sure that my loads are safe...bla...bla...bla...

Good luck!

I have an older friend(in his 70s) who was born in CA and he says 50-60 years ago CA was a great place to grow up and live. He finally got driven out about 30 years ago and says he can't understand why he hung on so long.

Jack

wow.. if he knew what life was like 50-60 years ago in cali, and got driven out 30 years ago... he'd be like... 90 plus? Did he move to Elko? Thats where all the good hunting is, I'd go there too..

Check your math.
Yes he has a small ranch SE of Elko.

The varmint and predator hunting is great here but the big game is thin compared to the East Coast. It can take years to draw a big game tag here. Whereas, when I left Maryland I could have shot over 30 deer a year.

I LOVE the 85 grain TSX in my .243. My load that shoots .5 inch all day long is 44.5 grains of IMR 4831, CCI BR2 primer and Nosler custom brass. It chronographs at 3240 fps. I've taken two really nice mule deer the last two years with it, one at 385 and the other at 380. Both deer were shot right through the heart and took 3 steps before crashing and dying. Here's a few pics of the 28 incher I got this year on public land in Oregon.
