It’s been about two weeks since I’ve successfully called anything in, so I’ve been jonesing to pull a trigger. Plus, we got a heat wave the past couple days and it’s finally in the upper 30’s!
I had coyote respond on every stand I made and they were vocal all night. First stand I shot a female at 272 yards (didn’t get it on video). She wouldn’t commit anymore so I took the shot.
Second stand, I had a double answer right away but they were right behind my truck. Was not expecting them to be there and I think they came right up road I drove in on before seeing my truck. Fight sounds ended up pulling them all the way around the pickup and almost to my down wind. Ended up shooting one of them at 150 yards.
Third stand I got a double. Worked them for a while but eventually they came to a combination of pair challenge howls and pound town.
The third stand I sat on for at least 45 minutes. I missed one about 20 minutes in the stand. That coyote popped up down wind and by my truck. I was going to finish after that miss but my foxbang fight sound was blaring long enough for me to catch one sprinting in a longggg ways out. I could see there was two of them but the other wouldn’t follow. So I stayed on stand waiting. It finally showed up at a close rise on the hill but disappeared for a while. I got impatient waiting and hit some pup distress for a few minutes. While scanning, it showed up fast and was inside of 30 yards. Luckily I didn’t spook it off while getting on the gun. Shot it around 20-30 yards and thought it was DRT. It got up and ran away so I had to send a couple shots on the run before anchoring him.
The last stand I snuck into a flat and got a male to respond to some lone howls before squeaking him into shooting distance.
Overall, it was a good night and they were definitely vocal. Was nice to hear coyotes again after my two week hiatus.
