Washington coyote hunting

Hey everyone,

New around here, but I really like the site! Just wondering if there is any guys from Washington on the forum and how difficult it is to find hunting ground out here. I'm from Minnesota, but I'm currently stationed at Fort Lewis, and I don't have a whole lot of time to get out and scout for areas. Any info is appreciated. Again, great site guys!

Gig Harbor here. Lot's of coyotes in this state. West side wherever you can hunt, and that means wherever you can legally discharge a weapon. Thick but lots of dogs, plus a good chance of calling in cats, both couger and bobcats. Especially up on the NW corner of the state. Some areas are best with a shotgun but clearcuts offer rifle opportunities. East side is much more open. Be careful over there, lots of "hunting by written permission only" areas and you don't want to get caught without it. Big trouble!! Ranchers are very willing to give coyote hunters permission. Coyotes are big problem in a lot of areas. You need to knock on some doors and ask. Takes some time, but it will pay off in the long run. Good luck!

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I drove out here from MN, and it looked like pretty good hunting on the east side...really wide open. Maybe have to make some ventures out that direction. Thanks again!

Welcome to PM!

I live in Maryland, now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif, but I grew up in Kirkland and on Mercer Island, near Seattle.

If I didn't have a lot of time, I'd hunt the tree farm areas outside of North Bend, off I-90, out toward Mt Si.

If I had more time, I'd go to the areas in Central WA, out around Ellensburg and the Yakima River, because that wasn't too far a drive.

Farther east, I've had good results over by the Potholes Reservoir and on BLM land out by where the Methow river feeds into the Columbia. As the other guys have said, LOTS of good calling in East WA. There are rattlesnakes over there, too, so be kind of careful where you put your hands and where you sit when you make a stand.

If you'd like detailed specifics just PM me and I'll gladly point you to some of my old calling places.

Good luck and thanks for your service! We have lots of PM members from WA, so if you need a calling partner or two you can probably connect with a few guys from here. If you post a message to that effect then you should get some responses.

Keep us posted on how you're doing, take a camera with you--we always like to see the results of our guys' hunts over in the Photo Gallery. We're glad to have you on board here at PM! WA has lots of good hunting and fishing, I hope you enjoy your time there. Er, just beware the I-5 corridor liberals, they can be rather dangerous, lol! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

i have always just hunted on the eastern southern part of wa, mid idaho OR and nevada and CA and up on the palouse but i once went over to my uncles near olympia and got five within 50 yrds of his house. you just gotto explore a little

On the back side of Ft. Lewis is some great areas to hunt. Especially towards Yelm. In you are hunting on the wet side where it tends to be thick try and find sign on the logging roads and set up along those. One of the most product areas I have found on the west side are areas of reprod that border a clear cut.

10-15 year old trees that are fairly thin so that there is plenty of grass growing holds a lot of game animals and this also means preditors.

Good luck and if you every want a partner give me a PM. I am always looking for new people to go hunting with.
